Soooooo....back in October 2016 Honda finally revealed the long-awaited (nine years...not that I was counting) next-generation CBR1000rr.  Not only did they announce the new generation...they announced that there would be a three-model line up...the base CBR1000rr, the SP1, and the SP2.

The new base CBR1000rr is sick enough.  The SP1 is the replacement upgraded SP model from the previous generation, and sports a host of advanced options and gizmos.  However in this new generation it's being referred to as the SP1, because this generation is also host to a third, ridiculously amazing model, the SP2.  The SP2 is being referred to as a homologation model, effectively a dedicated track racing bike reserved for industry big-wigs and race teams, that's just compliant enough to be legal on the street.

The SP1 will be run in relatively limited numbers, while the SP2 will be run in very strict limited numbers.  Honda originally announced last Fall that they'd be making only 500 SP2 units worldwide, with an allocation of 48 units to the United States.  However, all those that sold their soul to the devil, and were fortunate enough to get confirmed allocation of an SP2, were informed on Wednesday that there will only be 422 SP2 units produced worldwide, with only 40 units coming to the United States.

How do I know this?  Because I'm one of the guys who sold their soul.  On Wednesday at 10:36am I got a simple text from my friend who works at a Honda Powerhouse dealer.  It reads as follows: "Hi Nick.  Great news...we were able to secure your 2017 SP2!  I had to jump through some big hoops to get this done, but we did it pal.  Beers are on you."

So without further ado, I proudly present the 2017 Honda CBR1000rr SP2 HRC.  I won't actually get mine until November (I'm seeing a therapist in the meantime), so here's some stock/show photos of the bike.  Pardon me while I drool.

UPDATE 10/3/17: Well this bike has not amounted to what I'm sure Honda intended.  It has been having issues on the competition circuits.  Things that I'm sure will get worked out in time, but I've already been waiting since July, and the issues have caused Honda to delay first deliveries until around March of 2018.  I'm sure it will be a good bike, but my timetable just doesn't fit that kind of wait.  Pulled my name off the list and went out and bought something else.

Congrats!!! one lucky SOB !

Therapist ??? i thought you were going to the bank to get a 2nd mortgage. LoL
i sat on the SP2 429 Lbs last week and the new GSXR 1000. both are amazing machines. sad that the Honda is so down on power (top end) compared to the others even the SP2 having 10 more HP.
BUT
it felt like a 600 compared to the ZX10 and GSXR.  i loved it. Brembo's and Ohlins look great! i would get it. i honestly dont need to go 200. it is fast enough.
Honda is aiming towards the PRO rider with the SP2 and offering upgrade packages to pro riders like cams and such that enhance performance.

the bike is in the same class as the RC-30 and RC-45. an amazing machine.

Thank you!

I've test ridden both the SP1 and the new Gixxer 1000...and in all honesty the Honda was far and away the better bike.  I know I'm a Honda homer, but there really wasn't any comparison.  The SP2 will certainly provide an even larger disparity between the two, considering the additional power and even less weight than the SP1.  The weight savings and the centralization efforts are what are really paying off.  The SP2 is a full 34lbs (yes, 34) lighter than the previous generation CBR1000rr.  Add to that the inertia improvements provided by the forged Marchesini wheels, and flickability is insane...transitions from lean to lean should be just ridiculous.

I have a buddy of mine here in Houston that has an RC45...what an amazing bike.  He, coincidentally, is one of the other 40 people in the US that's getting an SP2.  So basically a full 5% of the production run will be located less than five miles from each other lol.

My roommate got a new first gen cbr900r when they came out.
He got it from out of state because there was none in NY at the time.
He was one of if not the first to own a 900 in NY.
What a machine. I could not believe how light it was.
Scary fast back in the day. Wheelie machine.

That span that produced the 900, 929, and 954 was awesome.  Let's not forget the RC51...sickening machine.

HRC has stated that they are fully behind the SP2, and will be producing several kits that are supposed to be available this Fall...interesting because the bikes won't even be stateside until November lol.  But it will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Ten Kate already has an extensive inventory of various items designed for the SP2.  They've already got data-loggers for the SP2 ECU, variable spring replacements for the Ohlins system, a full titanium exhaust co-developed with Arrow, adjustable rearsets, and a bunch of other stuff.  Looks like their relationship with Mother Honda has given them sneak-preview time with the bike.

You sure it's an SP2?  To my knowledge the dealerships have only received the SP1 so far.  SP2 order allocation was just confirmed on July 12th.

If you have a little time...two great comprehensive write-ups.  One of them gets a little tech-heavy...but if you like bikes it's right up your alley.

Yes the SP1 has the Brembos and the Ohlins system.  The SP2 adds the Marchesini forged wheels instead of the cast wheels on the SP1.  The SP2 also has different head and porting work, at the specific request of HRC, making it a better platform on which to build a true racing bike.  The SP2 also has a different piston head crown design, elongated spark plugs, and an engine water jacket.  Check the following link for a better breakdown...scroll down just a bit and there's a section "What is the difference between the SP2 vs SP?"
