The new base CBR1000rr is sick enough. The SP1 is the replacement upgraded SP model from the previous generation, and sports a host of advanced options and gizmos. However in this new generation it's being referred to as the SP1, because this generation is also host to a third, ridiculously amazing model, the SP2. The SP2 is being referred to as a homologation model, effectively a dedicated track racing bike reserved for industry big-wigs and race teams, that's just compliant enough to be legal on the street.
The SP1 will be run in relatively limited numbers, while the SP2 will be run in very strict limited numbers. Honda originally announced last Fall that they'd be making only 500 SP2 units worldwide, with an allocation of 48 units to the United States. However, all those that sold their soul to the devil, and were fortunate enough to get confirmed allocation of an SP2, were informed on Wednesday that there will only be 422 SP2 units produced worldwide, with only 40 units coming to the United States.
How do I know this? Because I'm one of the guys who sold their soul. On Wednesday at 10:36am I got a simple text from my friend who works at a Honda Powerhouse dealer. It reads as follows: "Hi Nick. Great news...we were able to secure your 2017 SP2! I had to jump through some big hoops to get this done, but we did it pal. Beers are on you."
So without further ado, I proudly present the 2017 Honda CBR1000rr SP2 HRC. I won't actually get mine until November (I'm seeing a therapist in the meantime), so here's some stock/show photos of the bike. Pardon me while I drool.
UPDATE 10/3/17: Well this bike has not amounted to what I'm sure Honda intended. It has been having issues on the competition circuits. Things that I'm sure will get worked out in time, but I've already been waiting since July, and the issues have caused Honda to delay first deliveries until around March of 2018. I'm sure it will be a good bike, but my timetable just doesn't fit that kind of wait. Pulled my name off the list and went out and bought something else.
