flatty not running

I recently purchased a 85 flatty that the po said needed a maf. It is an intercooled car with intercooled turbo stickers all over it so i believe the intercooler is factory. I believe this means it is an 85.5, which should mean that it has the same injection system as my 86 widebody correct? So my question is, is there a difference between the maf sensors for the different years. Will a maf for an 88-89 car work or do I need one for an 85-86? Also i noticed that it has a black and a green injector in it which I think is wrong as the injectors should be the same in that car correct? Thanks in advance for the help.

You are correct about the injection system matching the 86 widebody. The green injector is defiantly wrong unless the whole computer has been updated. The black injector may be correct, you can look up the code letters to see which black injector size you have.

 

The later mas will not directly plug in because it has extra pins for the pressure sensor. It may be possible to make it work with some rewiring.

If it's an 85.5 flatty it will have LSD, electric rad fans, intercooler and 5 lug rims. The regular 83-87 flatties will have none of that stuff.

 

 

If the mass has a rectangular plug then I would suspect someone did a harness swap to a later year. If it has a round plug then it has the OEM setup. Also there will be a MAP sensor just above the brake booster. If that is hooked up then the FI is OEM and the green injector is definatly the wrong one. It should have x2 850cc injectors marked with an H or J on the side. A L injector is an 87-89 primary (650cc) and a M is an 87-89 secondary (1050cc).

Ok it is a five lug car with electric fans and intercooler. It still has the round plug mas and the map sensor above the booster is still plugged in. So it looks like it is still OEM FI stuff. So the green injector is wrong for sure. It is leaking anyway so it needs to go, the other one we need to pull to find the code on it to tell if it is correct. Slowly but surely the puzzle is coming together. We are going to drop the tank and get it cleaned, sealed, and painted.

 

The previous owner said it would start, idle for a bit then die and not restart. We have not tried starting it because we want to make sure the fuel system is clean before doing anything so we don't suck a bunch of junk into the rest of the fuel system. She took it to a mechanic who told her it needed a MAS so they ordered one and it was a later style I guess so they ordered another and then never tried starting it after that.

good to know thanks. Ill take a look when we pull the injectors for identification. I will probably just get some new clips coming and swap them out just to be safe. Also the gas take filler neck is in pretty bad shape so if the tank is in the same shape then there is a good chance the fuel system is clogged up with gunk.

These cars have a wierd computer that senses over fueling such as a stuck open injector. The igniter will shut the engine down and will not allow it to restart untill it is completely cooled off. I used to carry another iginiter, and swap it in. Then it would start and get me home for a few weeks until I diagnosed it was overfueling. I couldn't just unplug the igniter and plug it back in. Somehow I figured out another igniter would allow it to start and run again long enough to drive home and more.

 

My thoughts are that the green injector is triggering this computer shut-down. Get some good correct injectors and the problem may go away. It did for me.
