87TSiStock
I have an 87 conquest and ive read that a major thing i should do is get an 88 ECU and my wonder is by doing this can i get rid of the MAF sensor when i do switch or does it still going to be needed? scott87star
88 still needs the MAF. Buy a plug n' play MS system and get rid of both. The 88 ECU isn't really an upgrade as you still can't tune it.

TexasQuest
Don't you need the 88/89 ignitor box too?

scott87star
You have to realize the ignition and fueling functions were separate on these cars, the ignitor completely controlled spark in conjunction with the dizzy vacuum advance/boost retard and centrifugal advance. It reported engine running to the ECU, given that signal the ECU did its thing with the MAF and rpm input from the coil sprayed the fuel. Replacing the ignitor with an MSD box is a matter of connecting the dizzy pickup output from the distributor and connecting it to the MSD input trigger. You have replaced the problematic knock box but you still only have the advance curves provided from the factory, it is a solid stepping stone.
