Hey... After this evening....I'm  really debating restoring the starion..

I worked on restoring the interior with Mar-hyde's vinyl dye....

Un-frikking-believable.

The maroon interior with 8 years of bein in the junk yard with

the windows down is being replaced by a brand new black interior...

this stuff makes all the vinyl and carpet look brand new.

It's extremely tough too. I could not scratch it until

I used my keys and actually gouged in to the plastic.

I though about doing buckskin, but the it takes a lot to dye the carpet tan....

I'm having better luck with black and am planning on going all black tomorrow.

I am 100% confident that I'm going to be able to take the carpet out...

power wash off the 4 inches of compost...

dye it and have brand new appearing carpet.

Lookin' good  ;)

The Mar-Hyde stuff, is it spray on, brushed or rubbed on?

Where do you get it and how much does it cost?

The glossiness look really good on it.  What surface prep did you

do before you applied the stuff?

If it will penetrate vinyl without a problem, wonder how it'll do on thermoformed plastic pieces like the center console piece?

Otherwise, results look great!

The hard molded plastice like the center console is no problem..

The mar-hyde pernetrate and becomes part of the plastic.

My (NEW!!!) center console has been sitting over night... I take my fingernails, and scratch as hard and as fast as I can and it isnt phased.. The color is part of the plastic now..

You will be shocked!!! It makes the vinyl, plastic AND carpet brand new.

To prep the surface, I just washed and scrubbed everything with water and a little laundry detergent...rinsed it very well, and then rubbed it with rubbing alcohol.

Total cost

1 can of Mar-hye = $4.50 at Oriely Auto or Checker or wherever....just look in the body or paint section.

Go out and try it now...you'll be shocked!

Yeah... the aresol can.

I got the whole interior stripped this morning.

Then powerwashed everything with soap and had the whole

interior dyed by the end of the night.

You are not going to believe it...this interior LOOKS....BRAND....NEW!!!

dead frikking serious...I am so pumped. I am 100% positive it will beat Conquest at the car shows next year....uhh  :'(

anyways... here are some pics...I still need to pull the

dash and re-assemble Stephanie..

$50....2 days.... 1 brand new interior....DAMN!!!!

TRUST ME...TRY THIS STUFF!!!!!!

I basically bought the town out of it...

went to every auto parts store so I got a good smapling

of all the brands... I used. Mar Hyde, Plasicote, duplicolor,

VHT, Napa, and Krylon.

VHT didnt impress me....The can's nozzle was crap and didnt cover

the carpet well..

All the rest seemed the same. NAPA being the nicest nozzle and coverage.

Duplicolor, Plasticote and Mar-hyde were great too.

I had best luck "Dusting" the stuff on...dont glob it on the vinyl....you do need to go slow on the carpet though so it penetrates in to the fibers..

:) It took me 12 cans to do theENTIRE interior ( I switched from maroon to black on everything... Mind you that this was including the carpet which took about 4 cans.

here are some more pics in no particular order.

One last word of warning...

If you get the dye on your hand....dont take it off with Laquer thinner...

The dye penetrates in to your hand...then the laquer thinner solvent just destroys anything plastic....and yes.....it will take your hand clean off...

Hard to describe how much this hurts....good thing I'm slightly masochisitc :)

yeah...they make all kinds of colors...

Most of your stock colors (Blacks, grays, tans, blues)

but they also have primary red, blue, yellow, metallic silver and white... could get really wild.

It took me 12 cans to change the entire interior from maroon to black (the carpet takes about 3/4 of it)

ps again... I swear up and down by this stuff... going to go buy stock in the company now!!!

Advance auto and Checker seemed to have the biggest selection of colors and the "Duplicolor" brand worked very well. Still likte the napa brand best but it was only in black.

One last thing in case I havent stressed this :) This stuff does not make it look good....it makes it look BRAND SPANKING NEW!

Wow Jay that looks really painful!  :o

I see one door panel that is black & tan. Is that tan one of the dye colors?

The results look good but the black looks really, really glossy on the vinyl and leather. I'd rather have it in more of a matte(sp?) finish. Do the dyes come in a matte finish?

How does the carpet feel after the dye is applied to it? Is it still plush and flexible or did it harden up at all?

Btw huge thumbs up for going to the trouble to restore this starion!!!

They make glossy and stain finish...

I sprayed that leather seat really glossy just for picture effect. You can run the can

back and forth really quick to "dust" the finish..

It looks 100% stock after that...not too glossy, not too dull....just right!

The carpet turns out great. It is still plyable and feels like brand new carpet....

remeber...this carpet was sitting for 8 years in the open elements with

4 inches of mulch fermenting on it...

After a wicked powerwashing with detergent and some dye....It looks and feels

brand new....SERIOUSLY!!!

I'm still in shock...Maybe I'll settle down by the end of the week :)

Jason:

I have some questions to ask:

1.  Did you use Mar-Hyde Vinyl Color Spray or Mar-Hyde Fabric Color on your red interior? If you used both, which one did you use on the carpet, the seats, vinyl, etc?

2.  Are you able to scratch/scuff the black dye off the leather seats? I've wanted to turn my black seats into tan seats, but every vinyl/fabric spray I've looked at says "do not use on genuine leather". I didn't want to take a chance on ruining my black seats.

3.  How many coats did you have to spray on your red interior to make it look "factory black"?

Jason,

It looks awesome!  I have a couple of questions:

1) did you dye the leather too?

2) did you stitch up the seats yourself?

3) most importantly, how did you do that with the seats?

KUDOS!

PS people from the old board used to rave about a website you used to have.  Do you still have it stored somewhere?

I'll try to answer evety question...

1) did you dye the leather too?

Yes/No....I used it on the rear seats.... I am planning on putting a set of one piece momo buckets in the front... It seemed to work fine on the real leather in the back...it looks great and is not coming off...I dont know how durable it is going to be...I really dont care though, I'm not planning on having anyone sit back there.[/i]

2) did you stitch up the seats yourself?

Yes...They weren't that bad...The leather wasnt torn, just loos stiching in a couple spots. Just took out the hog rings, pulled the leather and did a reall bad stiching job :)

3) most importantly, how did you do that with the seats?

Just washed with soap and water....not too much...didnt want to saturate the fabric...Then lightly rubbed with alcohol...Then sprayed with the vinyl dye...It looks amazing!!!! Who knows how durable it will be...we'll find out..

1.  Did you use Mar-Hyde Vinyl Color Spray or Mar-Hyde Fabric Color on your red interior? If you used both, which one did you use on the carpet, the seats, vinyl, etc?

I used the Vinyl spray on everything.

2.  Are you able to scratch/scuff the black dye off the leather seats? I've wanted to turn my black seats into tan seats, but every vinyl/fabric spray I've looked at says "do not use on genuine leather". I didn't want to take a chance on ruining my black seats.

I have used my fingernails and scratched as hard and as fast as I can...It does not come off unless you use something metal and scratch through the factory finish or gouge the pastic. It you're worried... just spray the bottom edge of your seat and test it out. Trust me, you wont be worried anymore after you do it.... I cannot scratch the stuff off of any of the surfaces.....hard plasitc, vinyl, or leather.... It melts into and actually becomes part of the material...you're going to be shocked.....JUST MAKE SURE YOU LET IT CURE FOR A FEW HOURS BEFORE F#$%KING WITH IT.

3.  How many coats did you have to spray on your red interior to make it look "factory black"?

Just sprayed until it was covered...about 2 coats and then a light dusting to give it a satin finish. Carpet takes more coats....about 4 to cover up all the maroon with black (I would assume that going from a dark color to a lighter one would take a bit more)

I'm a little confused too, you used different brands of dye on the interior, or just one

I used about 6 different brands from 6 different stores and all worked identically...except for the VHT brand (that didnt soak in to the carpet very well and has a wicked epoxy reak about it)

PS people from the old board used to rave about a website you used to have.  Do you still have it stored somewhere?

Yes...fortuately Chip pointed me to a link that had the old site archived...I have the entire site... I am planning on building a new site documenting the rebuild of moth my starion and conquest....and also the magna install on the conquest and 360 v8 conversion in the starion....I'll make the site after I get everything done so be patient :)

That's about it.... I just found out that Wal-mart sells the Duplicolor brand for $3.40 a can... Hell at that price, Just buy a can and test it out on your kick panels or cargo area carpet if you're sceiptical....

These 3 before and after photos sum it up....reminder...the gray spots on the original color it from the 4 inches of mulch fermenting on the carpet...

Remember, for the best finish on vinly and plastic....dont glob the stuff on...Hold the can about 8-10 inches away from the surface and make long strokes with the can moving about 2 feet per second.....For Carpetabout 4 inches away and move much slower so the stuff penetrates in....After the carpet dries, rub it with a stiff brush....IT WILL LOOK AND FEEL LIKE NEW! You'll get the hang of it

It's amazing stuff.

Jason:

Thanks for answering my questions in detail, as well as the other questions. I'm glad to hear the black color isn't coming off the rear seats. I was going to try it out sometime, but now I'm really motivated from seeing your pics! I'll have to get some at Walmart ASAP. I looked at Duplicolor's website and they carry color spray that's for vinyl & fabric. No need to buy 2 seperate sprays like Mar-Hyde & Plasti-Kote.

Nope...there is no need to buy 2 different sprays...the Vinyl dye spray will work on everything in a leather car... (cloth seats....you may want to use the cloth/fabric dye)

I just used all the different brands for testing purposes to share the knowledge with everyone here...They're all the same thing...

Update....

It doesnt look like it is going to penetrate in to the leather...

I gave the rear seat hell with my fingernail and it flaked off....

Ohh well, it's 100% durable on everything else. No one is ever going to sit in the rear anyway so I'm still in bizniz..

The can says....does not work on leather....use only on vinylm carpet and molded plastic....So it still does exactly what it say it can do...

  • 2 weeks later...

Damn! I was hoping it would do the seats. But still, that will save a ton on converting an interior. I now have a plan. Just need to get the dye.  How hard was it to stitch the seats? I've never really done such a thing but want to change my seats color. And it also needs new vinyl or leather. Thanks

I ended up having a local upolstry shop sew everything.

As far as dying the leather....you may be able to do it....just test the stuff

on a small piece out of the way...

My leather on my seat were out in the open elements, getting rained on

for 8 years. I could scratch the stock finish off too.

I tried the stuff on a real leather chair in my house and it worked great....

Maybe the seats had armor all or something still in them....

Just make sure to get everything ultra clean and you'll be more than happy.

I guess I'll have to try it. But my seats have been in the last few weeks rain storms and are seperating at the seams as well as worn pretty well, but I hate burgandy with a passion. I'll go out in the next day or two and find some of this stuff and try it out after cleaning it off very well. Thanks again for the help.
