wiper transmission pivot fix idea

Here is something for the how forum.

 

The wiper transmission all that pushrod and pivot business under the wiper cowl...

I see a lot of the passenger side wiper pivots are corroded and end up with busted threads or get stuck on the body of the car.

Here is the part I am talking about...

This part is stationary or the base...

I think one part of the problem is the pivot gets hard to move because of corrosion in the tight fit of the base center and then ends up making the base move and slowly tearing up the threads. All the ones I have taken apart are super tight on the pivot but where slightly loose at the base where it bolts to the car...this is me cranking on the pivot with a vise grip with way more force than should be needed just to get it to rotate...

So it might be a good idea to lube that thing with some good penetrating oil. I bet a lot of our car have slower than normal wipers.

 

Another fix for those with busted pivots would be to use the passenger side one. Its the same part...see the side by sides...

The pivot attachment would need to be swapped though...

can you post a pic of the proper assembly order of the transmission parts please.

what do you reccomend to use to clean up the surface? 400 grit?

what kind of lube should we use? salt water proof grease? or basic wheel bearing grease?

how about anti seize?

I would say 400 grit is about right maybe some 600 or 1000 even. I used some tri-flow on this one and it worked really good. Ant-seize would be a great idea if you took it apart, but that's a PIA if you don't need to.

Not sure what you mean on assembly. The pivots have a snap ring and the rest is just laying flay under the cowl...

The pivots can be a pain to get apart, but they will come apart. There's supposed to be little plastic shrouds on each one to help keep the elements out, but my last few SQ's didn't have them. I'm wondering, could a guy go get a large rubber grommet, split it down the center, and use the two halves kinda like valve seals, before the wiper arms go back on? If you could find the right size grommets they'd do a good job keeping things better sealed.

Ya definitely would work if you got the right ones. It seems the passenger side one is the failure point , more stress right there and stuff always piles up at that part.
