Helterbot
I've been asked by a friend to recover some photos off of a hard drive that has been corrupted and will not boot. I slaved it to my computer and I was able to find all of his photos with VirtualLab, but in order to download them to my machine you need to buy a recovery quota, and the 10GB price is ~ $100. I also tried with Recover My Files that was unlocked, but the photos were not recoverable with it. Any ideas of what I should try next? I don't want to make him pay for VirtualLab unless absolutely necessary. Thanks for looking.
jisleyjr
So with the hd in your computer you can't just drill into the folders and find the files?
natedog_37
So you can see the files? If so take ownership of them by right click on the folder, and go to Security, then advanced, then click on the owner tab then clikc on replace owner on sunbcontainers and object and select the user logged in and hit apply. Let me know if that worked.
Helterbot
The files are not visible by conventional means. If I open the drive there is nothing there. Only by scanning the drive byte by byte is there any way to determine what is on there. It's not a simple matter of transferring files from one drive to another. I think I'll probably just make my friend pay the $100 and stop worrying about it.

Helterbot
No one seems to understand the scope of the problem, so I'll reiterate. The hard drive was actually damaged in some fashion, thereby thwarting all efforts to retrieve files in a conventional way; I.E. the OS sees nothing on the drive. I used a program called "Recover My Files", and I was able to scan the drive for specific file types, and retrieve them. I think I got everything of value to my friend off the drive, so I'm going to stop worrying about it.
