Trust me, there is a need to organize parts that you might not even use. If you spot a damaged lifter............better take a closer look at the rocker arm. wink.gif

Mark each rod half AS YOU REMOVE THEM. (or before) Number punches can distort the rod if it is not attached to the crank or a fixture to support it from underneath. THINK..............before you STRIKE!

6mm tap (on left) is a "BOTTOMING TAP". Note it's not pointed. DO NOT TAP CRANK MAIN HOLES!!! A WORN TAP will do more harm than GOOD. Notice the head bolt tap (12mm x 1.25) is missing a tooth. That tap could have a crack in it. If it snaps off in the BLOCK............you'll be hating life. wink.gif

So, prof... Why are we tapping the block?

The holes get filled with CRUDE if they are exposed to it. Which ALL but the main bolt holes WILL BE. wink.gif  CRUDE in the threads will mean.............broken off bolts......inaccurate torques. wink.gif Not uncommon to find sealer in them either. Use a STIFF bore brush and WD-40 in the head bolt threads first. Then try to screw the bolt in with a few drops of oil on the threads. If you can run the bolt all the way down with your fingers...........DON'T TAP THEM! wink.gif

So, you're not making the holes bigger or anything, you just cleaning them...right?

CORRECT.  DISASSEMBLE TIP: USE MAGIC MARKER to mark ALL bearing locations on the back side. We'll be using them again for test purposes. TAPPING is part of cleaning. it's boring...........turn up the radio!! ;D  See why there was a TSB on the 88 rod bearings? The top bearing is the front main. Note how beat it is. ohmy.gif

Why is there no indention(for the oil to circulate around the bearings) in the middle one?  Makes me wonder if my engine had the TSB done.. :-/ That's disturbing, considering that I heard that Mitsu isn't honoring the TSB for our cars anymore...

Very good question. The BLOCK has the groove in it.........behind the bearing. You'll see that in another pic. The crank that came from THIS engine was C-H-E-R-R-Y!!! My "crank grinder pal" said........."They don't come any nicer than that, I'll just polish it." ;D $35. I would call these bearings typical of 100k miles plus of a well lubed engine. The TSB was for REPLACEMENT of the ROD BEARINGS in 88. NOT THE MAINS!

Oh Ok..That was worrying me for a second.. ;D  The TSB for the bearings was because of an inferior bearing 'material', not design..right?

Yes, that's my understanding. No............you don't need all these mics. We use them because we want to know right up front WHAT WE HAVE. A crank mic, A piston mic, A dial bore gage, Snap gages and a few others to check crank end play, feeler gages, (not pictured) to show rod side clearance. A "Height Mic" for available valve spring height.

You'll probably need everything in this pic except the small dowel pins for the rear oil seal adapter. You can probably use the bell-housing "BUSHINGS" again if you were careful when you removed them. Brass freeze plugs from ROCK are DABOMB!  The oil squirter gaskets come with the Fel-pro "Converstion Set". USE ONCE AN DISCARD! wink.gif

After wire brushing the cylinder with a SOFT circular wire wheel on a dye grinder (this cleans up the bore real nice but won't damage it..........set the dial bore gage near the bottom of the bore...........ZERO IT.......then GENTLY pull it about 3/4 of the way up. This is the LOAD area of the bore. The piston is smaller near the top. I don't know what Mitsu did to the bores in this engine but they never have a "RIDGE" and as you can see................nearly NO TAPPER! ;D We're still punching it .020, however. I'll test fit some other .020 pistons....cast vs forged to show you HOW the bore stays the same.......but the clearance INCREASES with forged.  ( the clearance is built into the piston.........NOT THE BORES!

Pssst. Look down that head bolt hole on the right. You think you'll get an accurate torque from THAT HOLE? wink.gif
