STILL NO DECENT REPLACEMENT WITH OD FOR THE G54B?

Guys, it's been abou 4 years since my last Quest, which I bought as an auto, with a fresh build and 10k miles on it, done at 62k miles. This was a 2 women owned Quest and I went through the tranny in 5K miles, starting nwith the loss of OD. I tracked down the builder who remembered the car who told me that tranny is good for a 100HP motor and even if he rebuilt it Im would go through it in 10K miles. Well, a few of the old timers here, regulars who may not be around like Mike_K, the Boosted_One, maybe Shelby, Chad, had spoken about going auto in the future as age made shifting the car a drag. There was a new fellow around the same time that was doing rears with either 3.90's or 4.22 gear set-ups for the rears. A 3.90 with the typical 68%OD, 32% reduction, those 3.90's become like having a set of 2.6x's. Cool, Huh? Never heppened though did it from the titles I see here. This is a place where a tranny guy could make himself a nice niche market that would be quite popular and profitable. The stock converter is supposed to have a 3000rpm stall converter but I don't believe it. Take first gear of the tranny, say a 2.80 times the rear gearing(3.90's) and that is over a 10:1 for first and add the better than 2 times the torque at launch and it is a sub 2.0 60' for sure. Drop into OD and the revs drop to about 2200rpm at 65mph! ACCELLERATION & MILEAGE!

I've been thinking of selling/trading my '99 Mustang GT convertible with aluminum Teksid block for another Conquest, preferabbly an '89 with BLACK paint and an auto and the SHP option. Asking for too much? Add a 20G with the TD06 housings and/or the wastegate that would allow the boost to be controlled, a couple of additional injectors in the "Y" of the intake manifold and a GM MAF translator in a blow thru position from the 1G DSM mod and a low 13 second ride should be fairly simple from there. Add a DIY RAI/CAI and a solid inlet pipe with Kelly's piping, exhaust with a glasspack in the mid section with an 18" body Magnaflow with dual 3" exhaust outlets and chrome silencing tips on those ansd you have a NO DRONE free flowing exhaust.

Speaking of, has anyone done a long tube header for the car? I don't remember if that is practical but a stepped header with a merge collector would scavenge the cylinders with the right cam and fill the cylinders with a full, cool charge of fresh air and fuel.

Well, I'll stick to the auto for now. Nobody has adapted an OD tranny to the G54B yet? One capable of handling 300whp and with OD and a stall converter that locks after the shifts? Thanks, Mark

I think 4cylfury runs a 3spd hydromatic with a 4.22. It has to be turning some revs. I have been meaning to ask him about it.

A few have done adapter plates. Bill Hincher could build the adapter or bell housing you need. I thing the 200r4 the grand national guys run might be the way to go. Smaller and lighter. The taniters have a 700r4 ready to bolt up but never ran it.

Thanks guys. I saw the same posts, same problems as when I left and I was thinking it would heva been resolved by now. Street with OD would be my interest. I have a '99 Mustang GT convertible to sell and then find the Quest I want, which is likely very rare. An '88/'89 that has the auto for the larger tunnel and BLACK paint. I once bought a black parts car and thatg car looked TOUGH. I'd run no emblems. It's amazing how many people don't know what the quests are:) I'd make it harder to figure out. My '88 Conquest had a Top Line motor, yeah and it ran strong! You know, Kelly's favorite vendor, probably hangs with the owner, LOL I know you have your own site kelly but if you read this, just kidding! I've forget the guy's name. I do remember calling thee and he would answer and I'd ask if this was ************ and he would timidly say, yyyy....e..a...h, this is *****. Now I know why. Man I got lucky sending my motor from near Syracuse NY to Hollywood, Ca. back then.

Had to change the auto to the 5-speed in that black car. I have heard of Level 10 before but have not checked to see if anyone has tried them with a big turbo like a 20G. I do have to add after going tru several turbo;s and an '89 Starion and that '88 that the 20G with a TDO6 housings would be the way to go. I had a 20G, a converted 19C I believe done by MiamiMachine, but that 17mm wastegate was so small! I had to use the boost gauge to shift. 25psi was the shift point, cannot remmber the rpm in any gear but it pulled so HARD, almost like the '93 DSM that followed. I'd find a Spearco 2-221 FMIC or similar and use 9:1 compression for some stretability. Buschur built me a motor with 9:1 and that car ran 1.68/11.68/122mph for bests on street tires. Quickest & fastest car anyone from the bohemoth days had ever ridden in. A guy called it a weedeater and I said "No, it's a MOPAR". Took him for a ride and half way through third gear he said, "that's enough"! Heck that's when the Holset HX35/40 was reaching full boost, 30psi. That car had a 3-step stutterbox and launched it at 4750rpm and it launched at 10psdi already built up and ran 0-60 in 3.6x seconds! 8500rpm redline. I asked David(Buschur) what was the redline and he said the motor was good for 10,000rpm but a dyno would be needed to see where my power fell off. Never did up to 9,000rpm. Oh well, a Starquest is what I want, the BEST quality cars I have ever owned.

4 back surgeries and another on the close horizon makes an automatic needed. My mustang has a 3800rpm stall converter that locks up at WOT after each shift and an OD that allows me to run 4.10's while it ends up with a 2.86 in OD. That is what I want with a new Quest. Unfortunatly it seems that it is still a fab work undertaking. That or try the Level 10. I still can't believe the tranny comes with a 3,00rpm stall converter. It sems like it is about 2200rpm. The problem is getting that 2.6L truck motor to run a sub 2.0 60' with an IRS rear, not condusive for good sticking. Many cobra's have switched to live axles for that very reason. Mustangs running 1.5x 60' times is common. Since we have a 281 c.i. motor most go with a pwer adder wether it is a SC, NOS or the best, a turbo or two! They simply refer to trubo's by the inducer size so a 50 trim would be a T-50. A/r's are foreign to them and T3, T4 turbine housings are also not a concern, just buy what the kit has. I liked the turbonetics 60-1 when I ran it though it was weak and I had mine replaced once, maybe twice. Revs quickly, can flow 60lbs/minute and flows a lot at low rpm's too. Still the best set-up 20G would be hard to beat. I understand Topdawg43 still has the 20G I sold to him several years ago! Please excuse my typing as it is early. mark

we hear of a lot of auto cars takeing a dump but lets be honest most have 150k or more on them already,, and few guys actualy service them properly, my truck auto last'd over 4 yrs @18 lbs on a 20g ,,i can asure you no 88 or 89 5 spd would have last'd that long nor rebuildable for less then the auto can be done

right out the door the factory did not set up these trannys to shift hard,, so they slip durring shifts,, a little tune up and clearance adjustments make all the diff in the world

I did the GM adaptor a long time ago, this system adapts the wide block 464 or the narrow block 463 or the g54b to any GM auto trans
