Engine oil primer

I can't take credit for this the original idea is Dad's. (Randy) I saw his set up but didn't have access to an empty propane tank and stainless line so with a little Home Depot trip I found what I needed. Here's a list.

 

4" 45' street elbow

4" female thread slip coupler

4" threaded plug

4" to 1 1/2" reducer

1 1/2" plug

3' 3/8" I.D. clear tubing

(2) 3/8" Barb X 1/4"MIP fittings

1/4" brass ball valve

1/4"X1/4" male thread adapter.

male quick disconnect adapter. (same that's used on air tools)

(2) medium hose clamps

Glue the 4" threaded slip and reducer onto street elbow. Be careful not to get glue on the threads of the slip.

Glue the 1 1/2" plug in the reducer.

drill a 1/2" hole in the center of the plug. (you can use a smaller bit and tap the hole. I didn't have one so I let the fitting cut the threads)

Thread in one of the 3/8" pipe nipple. Connect one end of the hose.

Do the same thing in the threaded plug but install the 1/4X1/4 male threaded coupler instead of the nipple.

screw the ball valve on the coupler.

screw the qd coupler in the other end of the ball valve.

screw the other nipple into the turbo oil feed port and attach the other end of the hose. ( I couldn't get the oil galley plug out of the block like Dad did so another option had to be used. This worked perfectly)

Put some grease on the threads of the 4" plug to keep it from sticking in the elbow.

Fill the elbow with oil. Approx 2qts. screw on the plug. MAKE SURE THE BALL VALVE IS OFF. Adjust compressor regulator to 20psi. Attach air hose. SLOWLY open ball valve untill you can see the oil moving through the hose. You wont need to open the valve all the way. Once all of the air stops coming out of the rockers the engine should be primed. Too much air pressure will cause the head to fill up faster than it can drain so oil will overflow the head and run down the back of the engine

I hope everyone can use this or improve it to your liking. (Sorry Randy for making a moped out of your Ferrari :roll: .

 

I also made this set up to pressure check the intercooler and hoses at the same time. PVC is 1 1/2" the rest is self explanitory.

Just a reminder- shut off the supply before it empties- you don't want to injest air into the oil system, that would defeat the purpose.

I suggest your post here get added to the FAQ perhaps injected right into mine on the oil priming?

The Pinto Primer..

 

Took about 2 qts or less and less than a minute to prime.

 

They have these at all the parts stores.

 

I found that the weird black plastic piece at the end self taps if you screw it into the oil pump port. It's soft enough that the plastic doesnt break off or anything either.
