ATTN: Body Work Guru's

Hey guys, I've finally decided to tackle the paint and bodywork of the flatty and my biggest concern currently is how to go about fixing the rust on the rear fender wells.

 

I have taken some pictures for you to see exactly what condition its in...

Currently I am talking with D_Venable a.k.a D-Rock about running some over fenders and just cutting out the rot, then welding the fender liner to the outer skin. If someone has some ideas as to how I can fix this relatively simply I'm all ears.

That is one idea that we've talked about pretty darn seriously. Derek has a rendering of a flatty that he did that looks SEXY with flares on it! I'm currently looking at a few sets that might work but am always looking for alternatives. I dont want to do a lot of modification to the body of this that may make it hard to return to how it originally looked at one point. Non-rusty rear quarters for flatties arn't easy to find.

The flares are fine, but you need metal there to attach them to. Fix the first issue the right way, then add your body mods. Hit up Sotty out in LV. He is supposed to be working on cutting out some patches for me for my widebody, maybe he can accomodate you also.

That is some great work there man... Sadly I don't have the tools to accomplish that. As far as the material to attach them too there is plenty. I believe what most likely will happen is I'll cut off all the rust, tack weld the inner fender to the outer skin, paint anything that was touched, apply liberal amounts of fender flare.

 

Yes I'm aware that I just over simplified it, but essentially that is about all I see myself being able to do with what tools and knowledge I have at my disposal currently. BUT I am always up for ideas, thoughts, and concerns. Keep'em coming lol

Not sure what you have in the way of tools, but you metion tack welding, which leads me to believe you have a welder, and really all you need to do these sort of repairs is a welder, grinder, and cutoff wheel, so if you have access to an air compressor, and can afford a cheapie right angle grinder, grinding discs, and cutoff wheels, you have everything you need to do it like BC and I have. Oh, and deffinately use some POR-15 in any of the really bad rusty areas on the backside to ensure you have some rust protection on the areas that were hard to get at.

 

 

I know seeing pics of huge holes cut out of panels looks intimidating, but if you know your way around a welder a little, this stuff is way easier than it looks. You may even be able to make your own fender flares out of steel, although it might be difficult to get them symetrical on all 4 corners without sheet steel forming equipment

The key is having patch panels. Unfortunately patch panels on our cars mean that you have to cut them off of a rust free donor car. There are so many compound angles on our quarters that it is very time consuming to make a patch panel from a piece of flat sheet metal. Rust free quarters do exist...just have to go down south to find them.

 

If you have the donor panel, it is just bodywork 101; cut and replace. If you are intimidated or don't have the proper tooling, you may want to consider having a body shop perform the repairs AFTER you find a good rust free panel. A skilled autobody tech could repair this with a donor panel in under 8 hours. That is pretty affordable if you have the patch panel. If you shoot the panel yourself, the repair may be as little as 4 hours. I'm no expert bodyman but I've cut and replaced both full rocker panels (using donor panels) on my f-150 in under 8 hours....not including minor putty work/primer/paint).

 

 

Keep that por-15 away from your weld seam...pretty far away. I had a big issue with the heat from the welder melting the por-15 and it running into the weld pool....believe me, it sucks! For a quarter panel, you can apply the por-15 after the repair because it is somewhat accessible from inside the car. A rocker panel is a different story. I still use por-15 on the insides of panels but keep in about an inch from the weld seam. I use weld thru primer for the rest. After the repair, I shoot in parafin wax (ie rust-proofing) for added protectant for the weld seam/pinch joints because the weld thru primer isn't the best for long term corrosion protection.

 

 

 

My experience repairing 'conquest' quarters (note I went for a full panel replacement to minimize warping.....Cut it straight from the B and C pillars).

Thanks for the thoughts guys, I appreciate it. As far as the welder goes I do have access to one but do not own one myself. I also have no welding skills to speak of, although my brother is a state certified welder and works as a fabricator for a company that builds heat ex changers. I think the biggest hurdle will be finding a rust free quarter that someone is willing to cut up on a flatty of all things. I'm still in the planning stages of the how I will be fixing this and then doing bodywork but this is all good stuff to consider.
