SCillini
I am trying to resolve a shutdown issue with my car and would like to test the car with a KNOWN GOOD 1988 ECU. Does anyone have one I could purchase or borrow?
Kenny G
it could be your ecu. however, I was driving mine down the interstate and mine would shut down as if you turned the key off. after many hours of troubleshooting I found only the distributor and igniter box left it could be. and yes, I did change the ecu and it didn't help. I changed the igniter box out and it started right up! good luck with your issue... stick with it, you will get it! Fuze
Random dying is a good indicator of a bad ignitor, it's more likely than a bad ECU as they go bad all the time.
SOTTY
Pull your battery out and check / clean EVERY harness connection in that general area , dig deep and attend to them all , ive seen this random shut down before and it turned out to be the main harness not making good contact due to years of collecting dust and other crap , doubt as others have said its the ecu as they are usually very reliable units. SCillini
Thanks folks - I've been working with the forums under this thread http://www.starquest...=145583&hl= on this issue. At this point I am pretty much done testing everything else. I have the ECI Checker tool which is telling me all the necessary sensors are working within spec - MAF TPS ISC, etc. I started questioning the dizzy. Last improvement was replacing the fouled plugs. Engine runs very smooth except it shuts off and is consistent. The car runs enough to get up to speed and then powers off every single time. riddle me this though - I monitored the secondary system on the ignition coil while it was running. I got spark all the way until the engine stopped turning. If it was the ignitor, why would I still get spark till the last compression stroke? If the ECU was shutting of the ignitor or the ignitor was detecting detonation, it should kill the spark and then the engine die. That is not the case with this vehicle and in addition, if I feather the throttle, I can get it to stay running but as soon as I quit, the engine quits. SCillini
Thanks Folks - Made progress tonight!! Issue is definitely NOT the ECU, so this thread is irrelevant now. I enlisted a friend to help give me a fresh look and a second pair of hands. We isolated down to the injector. If you want to follow, go to the thread I noted above. I will be updating that thread with the issues progress. Thanks again. This site is awesome!!!
