TACHOMETER PROBLEM

I have been experiencing a little issue with the OEM tachometer of my white conquest. Ever since we purchased it, I've been noticing that when the car is on, the tachometer needle is "lacy". In other words, the car at idle its fine (tachometer reads 900 rpm's) but if I hit the gas pedal violently, the needle will clime up very slowly....so the tach does not read perfectly. If I am cruising around it does the same thing.....from first to second gear, the tach will not go accordingly to the RPM's by sound, but once I hit my cruise speed, eventually the tachometer will get there and stay reading.

 

Anyone has any idea what it might be?

I did when I replaced the coil....I thought it would take care of the problem, but did not. Either I didn't do a good job or the problem is somewhere else.

the wires to the tach have nothing to do with the little blk boxes,, beside the fuse link box on the fender you will see a two wire connector , one of those wires are for the tach signal to the dash

 

also the coil recives power from the ign swt,,the swt recives power from the IGN fuse link in the fuse holder , it has nothing to do with the rest of the fuel inj system,, at the same time the coil recives power the ign swt sends power to the main relay,,jumpering battery + the coil + power feed will power every thing up includeing the main relay

I have found 5 or 6 bad ign swts but more often it's the fuse link

Shelby can you elaborate on the two wire connector you are describing such as color code, etc? I have an 88 Starquest that only has the tach not working. It doens't jump at all. The engine runs for a few seconds then dies. I have crawled through the ignition and fuel systems and am currently working on the vacuum system. I have verfied via my fsm and factory ECI checker tool my sensors are working and adjusted properly. I am searching around here for possible ideas on the tach issue. I believe it may be somehow linked to the stalling issue by the ECU not getting a signal from the tach. The ECU DOES get an ignition pulse signal from the coil.

 

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

And the car is running? The factory tach signal comes from the negative side of the coil, through a little gold box near the coil, to the instrument cluster.
