Hey guys, my name is Carlos, and I just recently acquired a long dreaded 87 Conquest TSI. It's my first car, at 16. Little background on her: my parents and I moved to the Vallejo/Benicia area 5 years ago. My dad and I were preaching one day(my parents and I are Jehovah's Witnesses) a d we saw her parked. My dad was instantly shocked, as he had owned one years ago, and started to tell my many stories of him and his Starion. We asked the lady if she was selling it, and she told us to just make her an offer. We didn't have any money so we didn't offer anything. Long story short, for 5 years we would pass by the house just to see if she was still there, and just hoping one day we'd make the money. I graduated, started working, saved up, and voíla! I made her an offer and got a killer deal at only $550. 87k miles. Her father was the first owner, and he inherited it to her. Up to today I've spent about a little over 1G, but she runs :) The biggest expense were the back fees. From 2002 she hadn't been resgistered. 738 dollas right there alone. My only aftermarket part for now has been a K&N air filter. Things I've had to replace are: fuel pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, oil, oil filter, belts, and this week the alternator, and cap & rotor. I have big plans for her(her name's Diamond) and I really appreciate such a great forum for all my questions and doubts. Look forward to many more grease keys on my keyboard as I search for the solution to whatever problem I ha?e. More pics will definitely come soon. Thanks guys.

Ohh yeah? Awesome man. I'm still trying to figure out which silver mine is. I have the burgundy interior(or dark red, not sure). How can I find out? And I'll try, buit I don't think I'll be taking this girl sideways, more like cruiser/sleeper lol. Thanks for the advice tho lol.

Awesome guys. I'm glad to be part of a not-so-common club. I've only seen one other Starquest on the road and it was a head turner. I hope mine turns heads as well. Feels good to not look like every other tuner on the street. 240's, and Civics are cool, don't get me wrong, but I'd much rather be seen smashing in a StarQuest :)

Welcome.

first thnigs first. It is an old car, make sure to od proper maintenence and fluid changes.

Then check gas tank for debris in the tank. can clog filters and create a lot of fuel related problems.

then clean every possible connector contacts in the engine bay. Especially around the battery area.

then the grounds on the engine block and in the engine bay. it is alll preventative measures.

Then check the injector clips. they tend to corrode over the years. clean and or replace.

if you replace them do one wire at a time. one clip at a time. check the wires for them and

make sure they are not brittle.

 

just some food for thought, thats it for now. i could go on and on...

Advice is always welcome Import. I replaced all filters, and haven't really had any fuel problems. Plan on only using premium. Not that there's really big differences, but I hear it does help run a little smoother. The connector thing I will have to do for sure. That's actually a problem I'm trying to fix as of right now. I have current to the coil and the coil is brand new but no spark. I really think it will be the Control Module. I hear 87's have problems with theirs. Something I will ask is, is it worth buying a new aftermarket one, or should I just replace it with an 89? Any advice greatly appreciated.

check the electrical system on the distributor. continuity of the wires. some times they get brittle and or coroded under the wires covers.

even test the module in the distributor. i stripped an injector wire and the copper was green. i ended up cutting 8 to 10 inches of the wire

before there was no more green. the wires exposed to the battery fumes and or gas fumes can cause havoc on these wires and connectors.

To me most of the time the wires and connectors are the cause. ohm it out.

Yeah I'm gonna be changing the cap and rotor today hopefully. I do still have to check all the connectors and give em a nice sand down. I think it might just be the wires too because if I move em around alittle, it'll make connection and turn over. Sometimes. Thanks for the tip tho. Hopefully it's simple.
