If it doesn't work out, I have an '87 Starion in very good condition I'm willing to sell. Rebuilt engine with less than 1000 miles, all new front end, brakes, etc. Brand new OEM 88-89 airdam, no rust. White w/ burgundy interior located in Long Island... http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/IMG_20131201_133515359_HDR.jpg

Well, she's all back together again. Front end rebuild is complete. I replaced just about everything - control arm bushings, ball joints, strut rod bushings, wheel bearings, KYB strut inserts, newer front springs, strut mounts, center link, inner and outer tie rods, and sway bar bushings and end links. I also replaced the front brake hoses, anong with new calipers, rotors, and pads. What a huge difference! The front end no longer shakes violently at 45 - 50 mph, and even though I need a wheel alignment, she tracks down the road pretty straight. I should be getting the alignment some time this week. I suck at taking pics, but here are a few shots of things going back together http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0144.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0145.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0146.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0152.jpg I picked up an extra set of wheels a little while back for $100 bucks. They were kinda beat up, but had very little curb rash compared to the ones that were on my car. So after reading Burton's instructions on wheel polishing, I decided to give it a shot. This is an example of what I started with http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0157.jpg And after a few hours (and sanding my fingerprints off!) here's the results http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0160.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0161.jpg I think they came out pretty decent. Not professional results by any means, but a big improvement http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/IMAG0173.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/IMAG0174.jpg Now I have to tackle the fronts http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0162.jpg Also, I no longer have to look at this http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0164.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0167.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0168.jpg It's almost done!! I finally broke down and ordered a new airdam. Hopefully it will arrive this week..

TPS/ICS reset and front steering question...
inspector10 replied to Ironside's topic in Virtual Mechanic
Check your sway bar bushings and end links. -
I appreciate the reassurance....Here's hoping I don't break anything else when I attempt to put it back together!
-
I was performing the reset procedure and all was going well until I tried to adjust the ISC screw and it snapped I disassembled the linkage, drilled the broken screw out and re-tapped the hole, and that's as far as I got (it's getting late, I have to work tomorrow, and I'm an old fart). One thing concerned me though - when the screw broke, the throttle closed completely, and seemed to get stuck there. I was trying to move it by hand, and also tried pressing the accelerator with my foot, but it wouldn't budge. I didn't apply a tremendous amount of force or anything, but it seems kinda strange...

You're not dumb, there are no removeable cam bearings, they are part of the head. Rockauto is really good, but some parts listings aren't quite right...
-
Thanks! Just placed an order with Auto Zone. I usually buy everything from Rock Auto, and when they didn't have what I was looking for, I never would have thought Auto Zone would...

Does anyone know if stock replacement sway bar bushings are available? I'm just about finished with my front end rebuild (I went with all stock replacement stuff) and I got the new end link kit, but I need new bushings for where the bar mounts to the frame. I've looked around the web, but so far I have only come across the kits for a larger replacement bar. That may be an upgrade I do in the future, but I just need to replace the stockers for now.

Did you have to adjust the position of the rear nut on the strut rod? The FSM says to position it 3.19 inches fron the end - would the longer spacer make that different? I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the geomoetry of it all...

Newb to SQC- My ride= 88 Quest, 38K orig miles

Awesome!!! -
I bought this kit from RockAuto, for my '87 widebody, and when I went to install it, I realized that the parts are different from stock. The FSM shows that the inner and outer bushings are supposed to be different, but all 4 bushings included in the kit are the same. I figured that was what you get with aftermarket parts, but then I also noticed that the metal sleeve that installs on the strut rod is about a 1/2" longer than the stock one. I just checked the listing on rockauto again, and it says "intercooled turbo; Engine VIN H"...That's kind of an oxymoron, so I'm wondering if this is supposed to be for a flatty. Has anyone else bought this kit?

I should be picking up the last of the parts I need for the front end tomorrow. In the meantime, I replaced the rear brakes - rotors, calipers, pads, and hoses. http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0133.jpg http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0135.jpg I also got real lucky and picked this up for $75 at a junkyard 5 miles from my house... http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww217/anthonyo196/Starion/IMAG0134.jpg My windshield has a crack right in the driver's line of vision, so it won"t pass safety inspection. Once I get this installed, I can finally make the car legal, and take it on some road trips!
