static electricity?

Just hoping for an easy answer to this mystery question. Had some help the other day, trying to get my 86 running, but it's still not able to be driven. Anyhow, this issue might be relevant, or it might be completely irrelevant. Holding a digital multimeter on the posts of my battery, the volts reading goes completely berserk while turning the engine over and/or running (however briefly that might be). Hooked the meter to his 89, and it held a steady reading, whether engine was running or not. Took his battery out and put it in my car, voltage still going crazy. Took my alternator belt off, and no change. Took some four gauge wire, and held another ground from the battery to the body, no change. Battery to engine, no change. So, can someone explain what this reading means, if anything? Sometimes a battery charger was hooked up, sometimes not. Made no difference. I read somewhere to wait an hour or more after charging. Is that relevant? Thanks for any knowledge, and/or opinion.
