Search problem

Guess I need some help in searching the forums. I've tried the search on both the forum index page to search all forums, and the one on the 'Parts for Sale' forum where the posting exists. The post title is: hks f-con which I have also enclosed within quotes, yet it still wasn't found. Beneath its title the posting states: Started by quikconq, Feb 18 2010 10:35 PM, http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=102703 so it exists. I even copied & pasted it into the search field. I've seen some suggestion that more than 3 charatcters are required, and a moderator's response that 3 characters followed by an asterix (wild card) would work. Well HKS* (upper or lower case) doesn't find any entries for me, and obviously, HKS likely has been discussed in many of the forums. So what am I doing wrong? I believe the BB was recently updated, could this be the cause? Thanks to anyone who can help. -Tom

I don't know the reason maybe to deter search flooding ,but it is a software issue,

and the only way it can be fixed ( I believe) is to have an admin physically type each acronym or three letter word in to be allowed to search.

This is a good reason for members to remember when posting to spell whole words so that they will be retrievable in a search function.

Although the whole idea of adding to the search function is sort of redundant because so few actually use it as a tool and would rather post a repetitive question

So maybe if ryddler wants we should start a list of three letter acronyms or whole words we want in putted into the search function.

Someone starting the post in a list and then any member wanting to add to the list,

should copy the list and then add his suggestions to the said list.

Thanks for your reply MM, but you didn't address seaches using the asterix or quotes. These would make the search greater than 3 characters. And I would agree that the search function is underutilized on this site, but I would submit this is because the search function doesn't function as it should. Other aspects that could be used such as sort order, are a bit criptic for occaissional users. There are other means to prevent overlaoding the system like restricting the number of matches or limiting the search range, so this should not be the reason, especially with today's platform capabilities. I think there are oher issues, because I received one response that my 'search had only 2 characters or was not allowed', when I searched for the quoted title of the post. Furthermore, if there are restrictions like this, why are they not stated anywhere? IMHO, Tom

Your right they are not stated but my previous answer of the administration input is probably all that is needed for them to be activated.

it could be just to insure there is not conflict with the Java language in the software.

(I know this from previous experiences with other software but I am not sure with this particular format)

http://www.starquest...ore&module=help

can be found as a link at the bottom of the page "HELP"

The search feature can be used to search all areas of the community quickly based on keywords you enter.

Quick Search

You can start a quick search by typing your keywords into the quick-search bar at the top of any page and pressing the "Search" button.

Advanced Options

If instead of typing your keywords into the quick-search bar, you click the "Advanced" link next to it, you will see some advanced options for searching.

The first option, "Find words" is where you can enter the keywords to search for.

The next option, "Find author" can be used to only find content from a specific user. As you begin typing a username, you should see a dropdown with username suggestions that you can select from.

The next option, "Find by date" allows you to restrict the results to content added between particular dates. To select your date, click the button - this will bring up a calendar. From here you can select any date and your option will be filled into the search form.

The next option, "Find in forum allows you to restrict your results to content within particular forums. You can select multiple options by holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard (or the cmd key if you use a Mac) and clicking on your options.

You can leave any of these options blank, however you must supply at least one search criteria when submitting the form. Once you have filled in the options that you require, press the Do Search button.

Inline Search

When you are viewing a particular topic, or a particular forum, you will notice that the search bar changes from "Search Forum" to "Search This Topic" - this allows you to easily and quickly search through the current topic, forum, or application, without getting search results for other areas of the forum.

Results

Once you have submitted your search, a tabbed page of results will appear - you can change the selected tab to choose which area of the community you wish to search. For example, results under the "Forums" tab will bring up any topics and posts that contain your search keywords, while the "Members" tab will bring up any member accounts that match your search criteria.

You can change the order of the results to sort by relevance or to sort by date using the options at the top of the results page.

The keywords that you searched for will be highlighted like this.

Once you have found the result you are looking for, you can click on it to bring up the page, or, if you are searching through the forums, you can click on the preview icon to preview the search results without having to leave the search page.

The search engine for the updated software is actually better than what it was in the previous version.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterisk

Agreed the Asterisk is used by Microsoft as a wild card and also as a shadow curser to hide pass words

but..

Asterisks used by java programs carry a connotation for an ignored comment

which I believe may be the case with this software.

http://en.wikipedia....Quotation_marks

Quotation marks are used for whole words and for including words together as + and - are placed before words for them to be included or excluded.

I am not sure if they are used in Java commands or if they are actually recognized.

Have you tried using + plus or - minus symbols in your searches ?

I'm just giving helpful insights for what maybe the problem you’re having but

I do not work in any position of moderation or administration or I could probably give you more definitive answers.

Thanks MM. I appreciate your efforts, and am sure you know more about this than I do. I had not even realized the 'Help' was there or a part of this web site. Why would this most helpful & fundamental aspect be hidden in the window's margin, rather than listed along side FAQs and all the other forums??? While I am a big fan of this site, I don't find it easy to use (ex. this 'Search' issue: How does one convey it to a moderator, who should be the ones responsible to address issues like this?).

Another way would be to look on the forum home page on the bottom and Instant Message a moderator through the link button

Did you read the following note below the report field? :

Please note: The moderator will be made aware of the link to the page you are reporting.

This form is to be used ONLY for reporting objectionable content and is not to be used as a method of communicating with moderators for other reasons

The second forum provides a list of Admins and Moderators, but makes no distinction as to who to report site abnormalities to. I earlier submitted one to the first ('Admin'), with direction to this FAQ, so we'll see what we get.

Thanks again for your help.

Yeah but aren't you objecting to no content ?

Thanks for posting that.

So use the other method outlined OK ?

Thanks for your reply Jimmy. Yes, I can now get several links with hks* even from the simple search field. Previously I was not able to, so I presume something has changed. But not all is well because I don't find it if I enter the entire title within quotes ("HKS F-con"). No links are found if I search for f-con, either with or without quotes. I also noticed that taking one of the links found when searching for HKS* I am taken to the actual posting within the thread, rather than to the beginning of the thread that contained it. I believe this differs from what I have seen also. -Tom
