Is that true, the 89 has a synchro and the 88 doesn't?  Is there a way to tell what year a car (engine and transmission in my case) is by vin decoding?

II know it's off topic, but since I already asked...  Is there a way to tell what year a car was by the vin other than a paid service like CarFax?

Go to carfax and enter the vin.  It will give you the year and model.  Then you can pay for the full report...
