Technology
Here it is folks, the thread you've been waiting for since.... last night! I'll start us off with my teardown from today, the pics will show you and then I will narrate a bit. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02426.JPG I started at 10:18am today. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02429.JPG Compression in #4 was the worst, but the gauge might suck cause they were all really low, it was like 50-90-110-110 or something. That was with the throttle wide open, but the engine was not warm. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02431.JPG Is the turbo too big? http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02432.JPG MMmmm, milk with every meal, and on your headstuds. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02434.JPG I think I cracked it, there are little hairline fractures from the coolant holes to the stud hole, and you'll see the headgasket in a second. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02435.JPG The goods. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02443.JPG Headgasket. Not supposed to look like this. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/data/529/medium/DSC02444.JPG Where I ended before lunch. I got out of there just before 1pm, so not bad for three hours. Now hopefully G54B3sgte can post his progress photos in here as well.

89PalermoSHP
You should have gone to MAP for the tune . All jokes aside, Im sure your not in the mood for them, does it look like the block will need to be replaced? Ive been thinking of making a torque plate, maybe this will motivate me to get it done so you can use it. It looks like your making some decent progress with the teardown. Scotty Dont
wt.... is with everyone cracking there blocks, are people not reading the instructions with there arp head studes. Just hand tighten! good luck with your rebuild i guess
Technology
Yeah man, I did just hand tighten! they were all loose enough to undo by hand (a couple with an allen wrench, but still) when I un-did them today. 89palermo - maybe you and I can go hunting for a block around here or something. You are welcome to come over and help. I need to find an engine hoist first though.
psu_Crash
O NoO! Did you not take your time with the break-in? What head gasket were you using? I just toasted an Ajusa head gasket after about 1k miles on the MPI setup with only about 2k total time on the new engine. But as far as I can tell all is well now. I destroyed the block in my first engine way worse than yours if it makes you feel any better. It took me YEARS to find a new block in good shape. (Thanks again Andy!!) I have a torque plate made from an old head, if you need it let me know and I will be happy to let you borrow it.
G54B3sgte
ok here is my part of the deal now i want you guys to notice the marks on the pistons from when the intake valves slapped the pistons and i am tryn to figure that out http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/stealthedgt4/S6300995.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/stealthedgt4/S6300996.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/stealthedgt4/S6300998.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/stealthedgt4/S6300999.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/stealthedgt4/S6301000.jpg http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn264/stealthedgt4/S6301001.jpg
Technology
I found your problem! it's that orange thing on the left side of the engine!
StarquestRescue
What the! Two different blown engines in the same thread? This will get confusing. If you guys want descent advice i suggest different threads.
Technology
We were originally going to have a teardown-off and race to see who could get the engine out first, but decided against that last night. I think we both have a pretty good idea of what's going on, so advice isn't really necessary, but very much appreciated, don't get me wrong. It's more of a "show and tell" than anything else, hence it's placement in the B.S. section.
G54B3sgte
I found your problem! it's that orange thing on the left side of the engine! in my defense please let the record show that is from the previous owner i would never use fram i am a K&N man Edited December 30, 2008 by G54B3sgte

serpentkilla
THis really sucks, mine cracked in the same spot but it was a bit worst. How many miles are on this build and is there any scouring on the combustion section of the head?

Dave-O
Man, you guys blow them up good, huh? Sucks to hear about the damage. Hopefully it's a block away from being repaired. Maybe I should hold onto my block for a bit longer, in case anyone really needs it. It's crack-free, just getting replaced by a 4G6x.

Sully
LG Rumors suck!!! I'm on my 3rd in 6 months. Oh yeah.... 2.6's suck too. When your done with that one, you can work on mine. It will be my 4th motor in 3 years. I'm giving up on building it myself. Apparently I'm doing something wrong Edited December 31, 2008 by Sully

Maxzillian
For those that have cracked the block in this fashion with ARP head studs, when were the head studs purchased? I'm wondering if there's a bad batch of head studs going around. IE, studs with undersized threads. Edited December 31, 2008 by Maxzillian
Technology
I bought mine used in probably 2005 or 2004 or something, so I have no idea when they were made. I suppose I should measure each one to see if they are all the same length. On this build there are many miles, I don't know for sure, but i ran it like this with the stock setup for a long time, hit fuel cut several times, but apparently stock fuel cut is nothing compared to this. It could have been a stud that had oil or something in the hole when it was installed. Very well could have been.
Maxzillian
Yeah, hard to say. I bought my studs around 2005 or 2006 and I've had no problems. What were they torqued to? I know ARP recommends a pretty high torque setting which is compounded with their moly lube.
chiplee
Yeah, hard to say. I bought my studs around 2005 or 2006 and I've had no problems. What were they torqued to? I know ARP recommends a pretty high torque setting which is compounded with their moly lube. I did crack a block. And I did have ARPs but I never thought to blame the studs or my overtightening them or whatever. What do you mean here by "which is compounded with their moly lube"? ARP says to torque their head studs to 80lbs with moly lube or 120lbs with 30wt oil. I guess if they simply removed the 120lb/30wt option we might be having fewer issues. I think 80ft/lbs with the moly lube should basically be considered a MUST for the G54B from this point forward.
Maxzillian
Well, the reason they state to use the moly lube is because it does a better job of lubricating the nut, requiring a lower torque to be used. However, I thought they recommended the same torque for moly lube or engine oil so I can scratch that notion. However, the factory recommendation is about 70 ft-lbs with engine oil so I have to wonder if we're by chance over-stressing the block. However, I would think that with some of the high horsepower engines out there that the block would have been stressed above and beyond what Technology was able to do.
