Was in the market for a commuter car...

... and I bought a turbo Dodge, lol.

A 1987 Daytona "Shelby Z" to be exact. I've been driving past the car for a couple weeks on my way to/from work and assumed by the condition of the body (very, very good) that it was out of my price range. That being said, I was reluctant to look and not be able to afford it. Finally decided what the hell, and stopped yesterday morning for a look.

It was parked kinda far off the road so I had no idea it was a Shelby car, just thought it was a base model turd. The owner said it ran great for a day when he picked it up and then developed a miss on the #3 cylinder, so he parked it. It's only been sitting a month or so. From asking around and some quick research, it likely needs a head-gasket. For what I paid though, I couldn't care less, I stole the damn thing. If it needed a motor, I'd be fine with that, lol.

I'll have pics up tomorrow night most likely, picking it up after work. It's black with burgundy/prune leather. The interior is extremely clean and probably the coolest thing I've ever sat in. The drivers seat has more power accessories then I knew you could have, haha.

I should have taken pics but I was busy trying to crawl under the car, haha. When I went back to leave a deposit, it was dark... -_-

I don't wanna say how much exactly, but I can tell you that the hood off my black Conquest would probably sell for more. An amazing deal I think.

The owner wasn't very mechanically inclined and is very particular about his grass. He was more concerned with his lawn looking like crap with the car on it then making money on the car.

Daily the SQ, like the rest of us badace's.

Why no??

I do daily it, in the summer. They salt the roads out here on the right coast in the winter though. It would eat the car up, and I would cry, lol.

Now you'll have to figure out how to get 2 cars to the show next year .. :D

Yeah man, I'd love to. Probably have my brother drive it down if I have it running right by then.

Did you get my contact info PM? The new PM setup is kinda weird and it may not have gone thru...

If it is just the head gasket get yourself the appropriate Mopar Performance head gasket and a 180 degree thermostat, you will have no more problems in that department. I believe the head gasket listed below is the correct one.

I found a full set of FSM's for the car on eBay and picked them up, should be here soon. Would love to have this thing running right without getting too dirty.

On to the pictures!!!!

Fixed this thing over the weekend, lol.

Did a compression test that came back 150psi +/-2 across the board. Had a few friends look at it with me and turns out it was just a broken injector clip not seating properly. Pulled a spare SQ clip out of the drawer and she runs just fine.

Not as fast as I'd hoped, but I beat a 200cc dirtbike in an impromptu off-road drag race...

Now I'm torn between driving it in the snow (which seems like blasphemy) and selling it for a decent profit then getting a real beater.

Take the muffler completely off, straight pie put the back, it won't be very loud. Run a good open element air filter and a few tweaks here and there(good tune-up). They made a larger turbo outlet/exhaust flange, for the Turbo III and IV, I think it was 2-1/2" instead of 2-1/4". If you want one, let me know as I have one laying in a box in the garage. It should surprise you how fast it is.

I had an '89 Turbo II Lebaron with the 5 spd and it turned low 14's easy with those mods. And would pull down 22+MPG all day. Topped out around 140MPH.

Thanks Rusty, I may take you up on that once I learn the car a little better.

It's not running quite as well as I know it can or should. I'm getting a few fault codes for the wastegate solenoid, O2 sensor and some speed sensor. I'm going to look into those in the coming weeks. In an effort to save money, I'll be pulling the Conquest off the road for the winter and swapping tags onto the Daytona.

Should turn the heads of those who pay attention, to see "SPOOL1SH" on the Daytona. The guys in the building next to our shop have already asked why the Conquest looks so different, lol.
