88 Conquest TSi

I just recently bought this car from one of my friends and member. It is a 88 Conquest TSi Limited that had been sitting for the past 5 to 6 years. We threw a fuel pump in it and drove it back to my house so that I could start removing all those years of dust, tree sap and leaves. I've been wrenching on DSM's for the past 10 years so this car is not too far from what I'm used too. Besides a after market exhaust everything else is stock. For the past 2 days I have just been working on cleaning it up, pressure washing it and trying to remove all the decals. Well on to the pictures and I will keep adding more as a do more work to it. Also I have no idea what the difference is between a Limited TSi and regular TSi incase anyone else knows.

clean out that gas tank! every starion I have that sat for that long or more had layers of rust in it. some hydrochloric acid works for cleaning it. just be careful not to let it eat through.

I think by limited they meant SHP (Sport Handling Package). 1" wider rims and adjustable struts. check the driver door jam for the tire size tag. if it says Front: 205/55/16 and Rear 225/50/16 then it's a non-shp. if it's 225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 rear then it's an shp.

Thanks, it taking a while but its getting there. I will put it up on jack stands this weekend and spray down the lower body too.

I guess its not SHP then according to the jam tag. Here is some pictures of the engine bay. I already have a lot of the tune up items and will purchase some of the missing vacuum lines. My buddy drained the tank a while back so we got some fresh fuel and primed the pump before connecting it to the feed line. All the fuel was coming out clean after a couple of times of priming it and we decided to connected but while still leaving the line at the throttle body disconnected until we made sure all the fuel coming through was clean up there as well. Also I have not noticed any rust yet besides usual surface rust for a car that's been sitting.

the thing is that it'll come out clean, but as it gets knocked around and sloshed around inside, the rust will loosen and clog filters mighty quick. it starts off clean and then gets dirtier and dirtier. it's certainly worth the check.

an easy way to check is to pop off the round access panel under the spare tire and pull the sending unit out and shine a light down in the hole and try to see the bottom of the tank. while you're looking, also feel arount the inside of the top of the tank with your fingers. if it's all clear and the top is smooth, you're good. if it's rough, clean it. don't take a chance. rust will kill the stock injectors in a heartbeat and that's a proxy replacement. you can also use the pickup assembly to look and feel in the tank. whichever is easier for you.

the car looks pretty good though for sitting. keep up the work!

Ill make sure to do that this weekend. Were suppose to get some nasty weather over this way so no choice but to wait.

I was surprised by the condition of the interior. There are some plastic panels that I will be replacing but everything else looks good.

I know what you mean. I'm a couple hours north of you. lol. supposed to get maybe even close to 20" of snow. I know that's not much for those in the north but that's a good chunk for us. lol.

what interior pieces do you need?

I only heard the once though. so it could easily be less. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I don't have a spare radio surround, but I think I might have the other panel. are you talking about the one that holds the mirror switch and the release levers?

You get get the stone guard sticker off too with a heat gun. Its time consuming but well worth it in the end. Those are nice when they are not all cracked up but look like hell after they have been weathered.

Advance only had the belts, plug wires, PCV valve, oil filter and transmission filter kit in stock. I should be getting the throttle body rebuild kit, spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor button by Wednesday. I decided it was worth waiting for the OEM NGK BUR7EA-11 plugs and cap/rotor kit with brass inserts.

Well since the weather cleared up I decided to drive the conquest in and get some work done.

Since I had the car in the air I decided to look into why the shift linkage was so sloppy and out of line. The bushings are either trashed or missing. So now I have to try to find the factory part numbers and hope that they have them in stock or some how make/ borrow ones from other cars. My GSX is also automatic so I might try some of my bushings and seeing if they fit, seeing how easy it is to find Eclipses at the junkyard I'm really hoping they work.

I went ahead and also cleaned up some of the grounding points and started the list for things that I need. So far this is it:

Accordion Hose

1G BOV w/ Flange

Dash Kit & Harness

Lower Radiator Hose

Air Filter

Air Dam

If anyone has any of these parts just shoot me a PM. If its within my budget I will probably buy whats offered. Also if anyone knows where to get them or has good shift linkage bushings, I'm all ears.

those shifter bushings deteriorated into nothing. mine were the same when I pulled my car out. you can still get them from the dealer. they'lll have to be ordered and you'll need TWO of the cross shaft bushings! they're not expensive. I have the part number some where...

- Charles

the part number for the "cross shaft" bushings is MT202944 (these are the bushings for the shaft that goes inside the cup mounted to the frame and is linked directly to the shifter.

the part number for the bushings that go in the shifter linkange that runs to the transmission is MA103843

the other parts that you need you can get mostly online or here. Air filter and radiator hose you can get from anywhere.

Air dam I would suggest getting from Nick (nikofab).

BOV would be here or DSMforums or you can just buy an aftermarket ovcp with a matching BOV.

And dash kit and harness you might want to explain.hope this helps you some!

By the way...RockAuto can be your best friend. look for closeout items as they all come from the same warehouse and you save BIG TIME on shipping.

Dodge dealers suck. If you can't manage anything from Mitsu then Chrysler would be the best second.

They would have to order the hose. they have them. I got a lower hose from Advance not long ago. Just make sure you tell them you want a molded hose. otherwise I just got a brand new molded one from RockAuto.com on closeout for $4.

Nick: No problem! The TPO ones sound a heck of a lot better than the CF or FPR ones. Keep up the productions!

Finally got the shift linkage bushings installed today and man some of them were a pain. I also installed the cap, rotor button, wires and plugs and finished up the transmission flush. There was a lot lot of condensation getting inside the cap. All the orange stuff is what was left from it. The plugs were also shot and flooded. I plan on installing the throttle body rebuild kit along with some of the parts I bought from a local parts guy sometime this week. Here some of the pictures. Mitsubishi forgot to give me 1 of my bushings that why only 5 are pictured but I picked it up today.
