I purchased this yellow 1988 Chrysler Conquest SHP in July 2003.

This was the condition of the car in Missouri:

I picked up this engine from a guy named John in Scranton Pennsylvania around the 2003-2004 year. More on the engine later.

Looks like the number 4 cylinder was burning oil

2012 -Starting work on the car finally....

Engine bay. Someone wired up some fan toggle switch. You can still see the red wire on the cross member. Exhaust manifold is cracked. Must have severely overheated. A compression test showed low values. I put compressed air into the cylinders. Air can be heard between cylinders two and three and also in the radiator.

Radiator

Since the car had a cracked exhaust manifold and a toggle switch for the AC fan I removed the radiator. After all this time there was still something in it.

Contents of the radiator. No wonder it overheated.

http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/u467/tsi_tom/The%20Missouri%20Project/Radiator/Radiatorcontentsfinger.jpg

I then took the radiator to Reiter's Radiator in Emmaus Pennsylvania.

The very nice owner said the radiator was very dirty and needed to be rodded. All better.

Since the replacement motor sat for eight years I decided to take of the head and see what the cylinders looked like. In 2004 I sprayed a lot of WD-40 in the spark plug hole.

I rubbed one cylinder with scotch brite. The result seemed promising.

After talking to Dad he stated that the rings might be frozen and that I should just rebuild it since it was already on the engine stand.

Removed the pistons...

Block is back from the machine shop. I also took the crankshaft to be checked but I don't have pics of the crank. I am going to take a risk with the rust in the cylinders. The machine shop said that "...you'll probably be ok..."

I learned that before going to the machine shop you should run a tap throught all the bolt holes. There was quite a bit a junk in the holes even after the machine shop cleaning.

Dad was right when he said that the rings could be frozen in an engine that sat for eight years.

I was wondering how to clean the carbon build up on the pistons. Metric-Man said that Simple Green works good. I bought a gallon of Simple Green at Lowes and soaked the pistons overnight. I was amazed at the results. There still was work to be done because not all of the carbon comes off inside the ring grooves. I used Berryman's carb cleaner to soak the piston and then used the old ring to clean the ring grooves. Also I used a bunch of CRC 2+2 to clean the oil passage to the wrist pin.

Before cleaning in Simple Green at full strength

I like that block color Tom ... I debated doing a color like that myself, but went with black b/c I had so many other parts powder coated grey. I didn't want everything to start to look the same and get lost.

Thank you. I used the same color Indiana used on one of his blocks. Duplicolor Cast Iron. This Friday I will pickup the block from Automotive and Industrial. They cleaned it again since I honed it.
