Scuff all the shiny areas with a scotch-brite pad, blow off any dust created and wipe the panel with a lint free cloth and acetone, if it's cold give the acetone time to completely evaporate. Seal the entire panel with sealer, this does two things; first it make the color even, if you have a bunch of light and dark spots it will take a whole lot more paint to make it look right, second, filler is porous and your paint will soak into it making dry looking discolored spots even after the clear is put on. Bottom line....seal the entire panel.

If you are shooting sealer, you don't have to sand it to put paint over it UNLESS you wait longer than 24 hours to put the paint on, then you have to sand it and start over with new sealer.

Wait for the paint to look dry, then put the clear on....

then prepare the other side masking it to prevent the paint from coming through the vents.

I want to see it on the car and I am curious about what the OP is doing to do about all the water and such that will be entering that engine bay now.

the intake area is covered by the hood, nothing else would be affected by water under there UNLESS you're drag racing then decide to wash your car and dump water down the vents...the amount of water that gets in there from rain doesn't affect anything.

I dont drive my car in rain, but I do wash it which puts more water on the car in one washing than any amount of rain it sees in a year.

There are also lots of electrical items under the hood and these vents are going over some of those are they not?

I'm thinking maybe this wasnt thought through so well....... :)

all the connections under the hood have a rubber o-ring seal that keeps the water out, the only thing that should be of concern is covered by the hood and that's my completely open air box...I've had my first hood for three years and driven through SoCal monsoons and never had a problem. Your car gets more water from underneath if you don't have that front shield on it....

I understand, my concern isnt while driving though. It is while washing the thing or if I get real unlucky and get caught in the rain. St. Louis isnt always so hot and sunny. :)

I have been wanting to put open working vents in my hood and have been watching this thread. The water part always concerned me.

Two years ago California had a storm system roll through that dumped rain for three weeks straight, not a single day without heavy heavy rain, and not a single problem. It stopped for a couple days then did the same thing for two weeks right after, still, not a single problem.

Looking Sweet!!! Fellow body guy here, cant wait to get started on my 3" cowl induction hood. You might have just been my inspiration to do so this weekend. Know of anyone or any links to cars that have the fenders modified? I was possibly thinking about boxong the back portions out and filling the open are with mesh like you see in Grilles.
