just bought a 84 flatty and pretty sure it needs the fuel pump replaced. the car is non-intercooled and all stock. the car wont be seeing any performance upgrades, it may get intercooled and maybe a downpipe and that would be the only mods.

so its not going to need a big bosch or walbro pump and i just need something to get it up and running. advanced auto pumps are about $120 and i can get them cheaper since i know the manager at the local store.

i was searching ebay and ran across this one but as we know ebay parts are ebay parts and you get what you pay for. we had to borrow $700 just to buy the car so money is a BIG factor. i will have about $150 in my paypal account next week from paul and its literally the entire budget to get this car up and running.

do you think this pump would be ok to run?

well thats sounds like its in my price range....lol. if you want to PM me your paypal addy i should have a few bucks left in the bank to cover some shipping. and thank you that will help out a bunch.

as far as i know it should be the only thing the car needs to get it running again, it was running fine when the PO parked it 4yrs ago and its been garaged that whole time.

I'm in the process of moving everything over to my new shop so how about this, I'll take a picture of it and if it looks like its good enough condition you feel comfortable using it then I can find out how cheap I can ship it to you. Sound good?

I just want to make sure your all right with its condition before you spend any money on it since it is used.

used is used,  as long as it works thats what matters, it dont have to be pretty. :D

like you mention it would be more how comfortable i am using a used fuel pump. the pump on my 87 was attached to a donor fuel tank i had to install, i hooked up power to it and it pumped just fine so i installed it as is. and unless larry changed it that fuel pump is still in there right now 8yrs later. pretty sure it was a factory fuel pump,

you always take that chance with used parts. i am not a fan of enlarging the access panel and just replacing it from the top but i am old and honestly dont feel like crawling around under the car by myself to drop the tank. i think i can enlarge the hole and make a new access panel so it has a factory appearance to it, not that anyone would ever see it anyway.

Do you think the fuel system will be clean enough after sitting that long? Or fire it up, then replace filters, strainer, clean injectors etc shortly after?

that i dont know. i will see how things look once i get to peek inside the tank and kinda go from there. if the intake filter is clean i will probably just drain the old gas and run some Lucas fuel injector cleaner with the new gas and just disconnect the line running to the injectors and see what flushes out of the lines and verify i have removed any old gas in the lines before i allow fuel to run through the injectors. i will probably take the injectors and also run some injector cleaner through them like PQ shows in his manuals with a 9 volt battery and a length of tube and a little air pressure to flush them out real good. then put it all back together and say a small prayer and see what happens...lol.

this is the donor tank i mentioned that is in my 87, i just used the fuel pump to pump the old gas out and the car it came from was sitting outside for well over 6yrs. but the fuel wasnt horrible looking and the inside of the tank was nice and clean and the filters werent all gummed up.

Just a suggestion if you ever have to get a new or different pump. I have been using the airtex for my stock replacement,  and have no problems with it at all. Some like it, some don't,  but it hasn't let me down yet.

yea the airtex pump would work fine for what i need for this car, i just need something cheap. it seems speedyquest may save the day for me for now with his old pump just to get that taken care of so i can see what else the car may need. later down the road i may buy that cheap ebay pump as a back up in case the used pump goes out.

like pcristquester mentioned i may have other issues with the fuel system since the car has been sitting. since i have a very limited budget i need to address one problem at a time and the cheapest way i can right now. if i get the used pump that we know works i can eliminate that problem so i can move on to whatever may be next.

i have already made the decision that if i run into some problems i dont have the money for my 87 may become a donor car for now to get the flatty back on the road.

Small update on the pump cyberquest, I have yet to uncover the pump but I still have about 3 loads of parts etc to take out of the garage so when I find it I'll let you know.

not a problem. i have learned when someone is doing you a favor to have patience

besides i am so jet lagged from all the driving i did to get the car.  it started with 109 mile drive to get the trailer, then 200 miles from the trailer to the car, then another 286 miles to get the car back here and finally 218 miles to return the trailer and come home.

i did seem to wake up before my wife and the 2 yr old so i am sneaking out in the yard to play with the pump and see if i can make it work.

well holy freaking crap! i just took a set of jumper cables, ran a jumper wire over to the fuel pump plug by the air box to give it direct power and nothing....so a couple hefty smacks with my hammer and the fuel pump started working, very weak but it worked. i let the pump run for a couple minutes to see if it would stay working and then i turned the key and.......

IT ALIVE!!
http://vid22.photobu...zpsqwy7odi8.mp4

it only ran for a few seconds but thats all i needed to see to have a huge weight lifted off my shoulders wondering if it was going to run after sitting so long. 4yrs of sitting and a bad fuel pump and it fired right up.

speedyquest i lied hurry up and get me that pump....lol. (just kidding take your time man, you will get to it when you get to it) at least now i know that the fuel pump was for now the only causing it to not start.

i love this car already.

thanks man. but seriously you dont have to go out of your way because i know your busy with moving to the new garage and i know thats just as exciting as getting a new quest. when you run across it while your moving stuff that would be fine, i have side work i will be working on all this week so i wont have a chance to really work on the car for a while. i just couldnt resit trying to get it started because it really has worried me about sitting for so long. i am sure there will be some other gremlins but just hearing it run is a huge relief.

Well cyber I have bad news. I scoured my garage for that pump and I can only decide that I tossed it after I removed it... the crazy thing I could have sworn I saved it. I'd move forward assuming I don't have it and if by some miracle I find it then its all yours. Sorry for sqc parts hoarding fail : (

its ok man it was a nice gesture to even offer it to me. i may be selling my 87 and if that happens then i should have money to just put a nice new pump in there that i know will last the life of the car.
