CV Axle snap rings

So, I have been rebuilding some 6 bolt CV axles and in following JohnnyWadd's post here... http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=144461 I managed to disassemble the inner side of the test CV joint. Upon doing this I learned a few things.

1. Mitsubishi never meant for these to be taken apart, but it can be done.

2. In my case, it destroyed the retaining ring or snap ring that holds that end of the axle into that joint.

3. That ring measures the same as the ring that holds the inner joint into the diff.

4. I haven't been able to source an existing replacement for this ring, so there is possibly a small demand for them.

So, this is where I am with this.

I have found a company that offers the service of making custom snap rings. The minimum order is 100 rings. I have already measured the rings and submitted an inquiry for 100 of them.

Who, if anybody, is interested in a couple? I know that most people will want a price first, but I am just trying to figure out if there is even enough demand for them.

BTW here is what my axle looked like after I got it out of the CV joint and cleaned up.

You can see that it chipped a couple of the splines, but it doesn't appear that it will be of any detriment to the axle, so I plan to put it back together and run it and see if it has any noise or issues.

So, post up here if you are interested.

Nice work. I am surprised you got the chipping though.

Thank you, I was too. The snap ring wouldn't compress into the groove like it should have. I have a pile of CV's and intend to try again with some of them and see if they all act this way or if there is a way to force the ring to compress before trying to pull the axle.

Thanks for the replies and interest folks. Stay tuned...

Thanks for the support, everyone. I heard back from the company today. They emailed me a schematic of the snap ring and a price per piece. It is a bit higher than I had hoped, but it really isn't too bad, considering that it will be a very small run of parts. It will take approximately one month to have them. I think I will pull the trigger on this and hope it hits the mark.

I will update this as I find out more.

Folks,

There wasn't a whole lot of interest, and it was going to be a pretty expensive (up front costs) project. I decided to go with it, but the company I was in contact with, wanted me to go through another company like Fastenal, and wouldn't deal directly with me. I explained that I just wanted one order of 100 rings and that I didn't want to pay a middle man/company. I offered to pay up front, but they wanted to work it with business accounts and invoices etc. It just wasn't worth the hassle...yet. Sorry. So, if someone here is a small business owner (Dad) and wishes to pick up where I left off, PM me, and I will pass along the info with the part number, contact info, and rendering of the ring. If GNT or one of the other community vendors wants to take it up and run with it, I will be happy to share the info with them as well.

Hey Britt. Greg and I talked about this last nite. Start up a group pm and give us the skinny. We have a couple options on a "business" to deal with. Let's see if we together can get these made at least one time. lol. Edited by wrngwae
