External Wastegate with stock mani

Hello All!

Nice to see the site back up. Anyways i am looking to use an external wastegate with my setup simply because the 18G i have has the internal welded shut. That and i already bought a 38mm tial to go with the MK1 SS mani I have that has cracked. So how can this be done? thought about cutting a 38mm hole in the mani and then weld a tube w adapter for the wastegate but i know that welding cast is extremely dificult without cracking it and i am not that good at welding anyways (even though i have a TIG). I was thinking of trying something like the turbonetics manifold but I am sure the stock walls are not thick enough to mill a flat spot and then tap. What are my options. wonder which evo turbo they mean?

 

wastegate flanges may match, it may just bolt on

 

you think that is a generic picture? that puts the turbo on top the motor mount or up against the oil filter that just looks like an evo manifold to me

So i am going to have to get a different manifold aren't I. Or run without a wastegate :eek1bluegreen: ha ha ... I'll figure something out.

 

 

No you can use the stock one

There is a flat spot in the casting on the manifold it’s the best place well not the best the easiest place to put it. I have done a few like that. Thats how the EIP guys did it as well.

Excellent. So putting the wastegate directly onto a flat spot that I mill into the flat of the mani won't get in the way of my turbo? Or did you just connect a flange with a tube to another wastegate flange? Some more details please. Do you have any pics Tainter? Thanks! Edited by psu_Crash

I mounting a flange right on there you need to make sure it will fit in there matters on the wastegate but i did with a 38mm Tial one.

Anyone else modded a stock manifold like this? Somebody must have some more info ... please.

Chris Viper installed one on the Stock manifold between 3-4 on the bottom flat spot.

I used a 1 3/4" pipe to direct the exhaust out beside the 3" exhaust dp

Nickle-99 works great $50 a pack

Thanks Kelly! Well I guess it is time to test my welding ability this weekend. Any idea how he heated the manifold? I know cast is real tricky to weld without cracking it. I'll let you know how it goes!

So I finally had a chance to try it. I milled out a spot on the bottom of the manifold, near runner #3, so that a flange that i made would sit in there nice. Then I stuck the manifold in a furnace at work for a couple hours at 600 degrees. Took it out and welded away at it. Everything looks pretty good at the moment but it is sitting wrapped in a kevlar blanket to cool. Find out tonight how it worked out. Hopefully no cracks in the mani. Cracks in the weld i can deal with, and fix. It isn't pretty but it should work. I will get some pics up soon.

Check it out! May not be the prettiest welds but they are solid and no cracks. I think it will work! Also ground the gasket surfaces perfectly flat and square.

 

Milled the manifold and spot welded my homemade flange.

Heated the manifold to 700 degrees F and TIG welded with a Nickel rod. Then allowed it to cool overnight wrappd in a kevlar blanket. I am freakin pumped! Goes on tomorrow hope all is well!

Ok .. so got the modded manifold on and went to put the wastegate on .... $%&! it didn't fit! The wastegate won't clear my motor mount. I tried to put the flange as close to the colector as I could thinking it will flow better. Well apparently I didn't measure very well because it needs to be roughly and inch closer to port #4 to have good clearance. O well I will fab up an elbow and all should be well then. So just FYI to anyone else, put the flange between runners 3 and 4 if you want to bolt the wastegate right on there. So far it's Manifold 2, Me 0. Hope to even the score this weekend.

Yep I have been running it for a while now without issues. Using a Tial 38mm wastegate controlled by an HKS EVC3, it works GREAT! My only issue is the wastegate vents to atmosphere pretty much right onto the pass motor mount, which may or may not eventually be a problem.

You have the problem of "blowing out spark" and also boost creep. This is telling me you have too much fuel and unburnt fuel is casing that to make boost as the fuel ignites in the turbine housing. The path you want to port in a stock turbine housing isn't just the one leading to the blade its the one leading to wastegate flap. What kind of boost controller you using?
