inspection failure again

well i failed inspection here in Virginia.

The reason is no EGR Valve. my car

never had one since before i purchased

it.i do have an EGR and can install it but

all the related items including the Charcoal

canister and thermal valve are gone. I want

to go MPI and don't know how i will ever pass

once that is complete.

 

anyone in Northern Virginia have any advice?

Move a little south ;) I don't know how people in nova deal with the traffic and all that.. it kills me every time I'm up there haha.

 

In all seriousness, I don't know as my county dosent have emissions. I don't know if this is feasible but I have heard of people getting a PO box in a neighboring county and registering their vehicle at that address to avoid emissions. I have no clue how legal that is, or even how well it works

How about just putting all the emissions stuff back on? Charcoal canister is no big deal, egr and hoses. I realize people remove them to declutter the engine bay, but the canister is really tucked in, I don't see how that's a big deal.

Pretty sure it's like Maryland... "A SCAM!" It never really has to pass emissions, you just have to prove???, that you have spent $500 in an effort to get it to pass, then it is waived. However, in Maryland: if a car is 20 years old or older, it does NOT have to do emissions, it's waived! Check into it, as they continued to send me the emissions slip, even after the car reached the 20 year mark. I just went in, explaind the law, & they never bothered me again? GL ;)

You cannot get around it or fool it or pay someone, the computer tells DMV your car fails before the tech even tells you. You MUST either reinstall the egr or re-register the car about 30 minutes to the west of you where emissions is not an issue.

 

Obviously you can't even renew your tags until this is corrected.

 

I can help you if you need a few pieces like a thermovalve. Don't have any spare canisters. Not sure if you need anything more than the working egr really.

If it's just a quick test you don't need the thermovalve. It's only function is to prevent EGR and evap canister from working when the engine is cold. Why not put the EGR back on? Taking it off does nothing to add performance. It's only on during cruising to lower combustion temps.

Pretty much. They sure aren't testing it cold. The only concern from there would be visual - if the guys even know what they're looking at on this old beast. The test is pretty thorough as they go... egr, gas cap, limits on 3 different rpm ranges, like that.

Thanks for all the help.

I just got a EGR and will bolt it on, the funny thing

is that i have no EGR on the car and the manifold

holes for EGR are actually welded shut. so if the

EGR was on or off does not matter it still will not

function.

I will look in to classic and or antique plates.

PO Box is another thought for sure.

I hope I'm wrong BUT I sort of think the EGR must be operational to pass? Not sure at all if the system can tell but I sort of assume so. Might have to ask my inspection dude. Need to see him on my volvo anyway.

Indeed I just looked up antique plates:

  • Gasoline powered passenger or property carrying vehicles with a model year that is more than 25 years old before January 1 of the current calendar year.As an example, vehicles with a model year of 1984 are exempt from emissions on or after January 1, 2009; vehicles with a model year of 1985 will be exempt from emissions on or after January 1, 2010.Vehicles 25 years old or older qualify as antique motor vehicles but are not required to display antique license plates to qualify for the emissions exemption. Although exempt from the emissions inspection, the $2 emissions fee is required when renewing these registrations.

Yes. EGR lowers combustion temps. High combustion temps = high NOX emissions. High NOX emissions = failed smog check.

^ Yep that is how they check. Now if you can still keep your numbers down you can still pass.

 

 

Also if you have already been flaged as failed, you cannnot just get a historical, collector ECT and then not have to take it. You would have to make it pass and then you can get your historical collector ECT. Atleast in OH it works that way. My dad is in that boat right now, which is a total joke, but it is what it is. Told him to not even test it, or sell it to me and ill sell it right back.
