  1. Thanks, Mike! Good to know there are several local or fairly close people who have experience with these cars. I love the car, but this forum and you people in it make ownership of one of these "difficult" beasts not so difficult, making me love the car even more! Back in college, I cringed every time I thought something might be wrong with the car knowing it would be hard to find parts and expensive (i.e. not a very good car for a broke college kid!) not knowing where to turn. The more I read in this forum, the more excited I am to be an owner again!
  2. Richie_Rich, I'm in St. Peters, not too far from ya! Posting some pics below that were taken this morning. I'm not crazy about the red interior or white paint - especially since it's a re-paint and there are places you can see the cream/off-white original paint underneath. Doesn't show in the pics, though. Paint job down the road. I was really also hoping to find a manual, but every one I looked at within a couple areas seemed to have a lot of issues and not been very well cared for. Those are things that can be remedied in time, but at least I have the car! It badly needed tires, so yesterday the car got some new kicks. I'm going over her and noting symptoms and issues that I find, and have started going through all the posts to find the diagnosis and fix. I don't think there's anything TOO major, and at least the car runs well. There's some blue smoke at startup when it's been sitting...smells more gassy than oil. Guessing turbo-related from what I've read so far here. There's a small clicking in the engine which speeds up as the car does. And it idles rough. Seller said the idle may be the MAF, and when he swapped a couple of clips, it ran smoother but seemed to have a little less power. Switching back gives the rough idle back. The shop that put the tires on thinks it may be injectors and - surprise, surprise! - couldn't find any for this car. Seller also had shop manuals for the car which I will be going through. All in all, seems like a great car with issues that I can live with for now and fix through all the great stuff on this site!
  3. Hey everybody! New (again) Conquest owner. Recently bought Wattle's white '89 'Quest that he had posted here and on CL. I had a silver '89 TSI back in college about 15 yrs ago and absolutely loved it, but it had been beat to hell pretty good before I got it and its life was short. Now I'm older, wiser (debatable if you ask my wife after I brought the car home!), and willing to take my time to get things right rather than just do a quick fix so I can tear-tail around and get too many speeding tickets. I've been browsing these forums for about 2 years here and there, waiting until I could get back into a Starquest. Great info on here, guys! There's so much detail and it's great to see how much people help out on here. I'm not a car mechanic, but the detailed info and especially the suggestions of what to do BEFORE getting started on any project is great material. Looking forward to reading more as I update and freshen up my ride!
