Ok, most of you know me and my dad opend an auto shop, doing light work like tune ups and oil changes..

anyway, my dads frend worked with us as a business partner with my dad, shop was not open yet and we were going through the paperwork to get it legal and all that. we just had to wait for an inspection.

while we were waiting on paperwork and inspection we were working on our cars to keep busy for the moment

we took our cadalac to the shop to do the motor mount and sell it for a profit. Got the work done and tryed to sell it. title was at the shop and it was an open title so we dident have to go through us registering it

bottom line. today me and my dad go down to the shop at around noon and we see its closed up, the cars that were ours and parked in the shop are outside and doors closed, all the cars were there except the caddy. we look around more and see a complete set of tools missing, ac machine and ac refegerent. we suspect our business partner took em. so we call cops, they show up and say they cant do anything its a civil matter

one of the neiboring shops is a frend of ours and knows our business partner, we told him about the problem and he told us to call the partner. we do and we get no ansur, the neibor tryes and he gets no ansur

about 2 hours later my neibor shop gets a blocked call from our partner and he is said to meet him up at a local casino's poker room...we wana go out and see whats going on...what do you guys advise me and my dad to do...need help asap becaus we should be meating up with him soon

sorry for spelling im in a roush!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well that sucks. The cops should have taken the police report regardless, you don't positively know it was your partner that took the stuff. Could have been a thief with a taste for Caddy's and tools. Just tell the guy upfront, "Hey, did you happen to borrow some tools and the Caddy?" You know, so you don't accuse of him of being a thief up right off the bat. I his story don't pan out, whack him a torque wrench!! :chair:

Report a stolen car!! Call the state police if the locals won't do anything... or even the county police. BEND the story to get thier tails to do something. Sounds like it's Reno 911 out there.

I'd be so pissed. In fact I am kinda pissed...

Do you have insurance? I still would try to file a police report unless he was on the business license too. In that case he is entitled to the equipment as much as you. Your only recourse would be a civil suit to prove he took your property. He probably won't show up for court which would be an automatic win for you. Collecting is another matter. He would be in contempt if he didn't pay but I don't know how aggressive the court system is there. I was allowed to file a lien on someones property here. Wish I had money to help you out. I did by lotto tickets tonigt. If I win I'll buy you new equipment. 13 mill ought a do it.

Cops (most) are laaaaaaaaaaaaazy. And think they know everything. Here's your story to get thie tails to put out an APB on the caddy:

You didn't report it stolen earlier cuz you assumed your friend borrowed it without asking, but hours later you've come to realize that it may have not been him who took the car and it is stolen. There was an AC machine and complete set of tools inside.

Bam... cops get something to do which may involve pursuit... they should be all over that.

BTW, I'd look into your neighbor shop about his "story" and the "call". Be veeeeeeeery suspect of that guy as well.

im gonna break it down,

Shop-it was just opend, about 3 weeks since we got the key, we are going through getting the paperwork and documentaion for it and inshurance for it

Caddy- we bought it a few months back with the intent of me driving it after we sell an old car we had, we left the title open so we wouldent have to go throught the headache of getting it smogged/registered...so title is open!

Tools- bought and payed for in cash,

I thought of bending the story quite a bit with a personal threat to me, i was going to say he called from a pay phone and said if i dont get 4k you wont see your car and tools and you will be in for an a** beating or somthing simalar...dont know if it works though

also another way i could get him in trouble is calling in a drunk driver in a gold caddy deville on 20's...smelled the scent of pot and discribe the guy...also the car dosent have up to date tags or inshurance so at least he would get boned in the bunghole a bit...

I think this guy and my car is long gone.....dont know what to do besides facing our loss and keep on keeping on....god knows where the caddy could be by now with its open title, either its sold to someone he knows or he is registering it for himself...

Post pics and info of the caddy... there's lots of guys around you... I think. Everyone can be on the lookout. This is where the power of the internets can help tremendously.

Post pics and info on craigslist as well.

Write to your local news paper... even call the tv news stations, could be a slow day for them. But, they like police... so they not might want to do it if it makes police seem lazy.

Call the Cops and just tell the truth.

You make up a story about ransom and it could backfire on you.

The Truth Never changes!

For cops it does. They'll lie thier a** off to you. NEVER trust a cop if it's you who is in trouble with the law.

I may be off, but since the paperwork has not been completed. the property taken still belongs to the person who brought it to the table.

Just because you happen to know the person that stole the property, it doesn't make it a civil matter.

Of course you are only assuming you know who stole it.

Did you buy the tools with money pooled together for the business?

Hand tools are usually kept as personal property.

Do you have a bill of sale for the car or some other documentation from the seller?

If so, it doesn't matter who has the title, the car belongs to the buyer(you).

Report the car as stolen and mention the title.

You will probably get some crap of why didn't you change the title.

Mention your original intent to drive the car, but it needed repair, so you held up on changing the title until it was fixed.

They don't need to know you changed your mind and decided to sell it.

Thats exactly what i said about the title, it needed repairs and dident wana pay registeration while its being repaired, they said they cant do anything and its his car if he has the title even if i talk to the old owner and get a bill of sale from him

Cadillac can be stripped in a matter of hours. Most likely the reason it was stolen. Title is still in the previous owner's name, so technically you have to go through the previous seller to report the car stolen. How nice.

If you end up making up some BS story chances are you'll only hurt yourself. Not to mention posting it on an open website isn't the smartest thing either.

Why would someone steal a couple grand worth of tools, a busted-@$$ used ridiculous looking Cadillac..and flea the state/country ? Are people that desperate?

So, did he steal the title with the Cadillac? Thats the only way he can transfer and register the car anyways.

Don't tell the cops that you know who stole it. I had some goods stolen and told the cops I think I know who stole them. The cops then would not write it up, and the cops said it was a civil matter. The guy moved to Texas and I would have to go to Texas to file the civil matter. Per the cops and the court. I ending up taking a big loss of about $5000. I was young at that time and didn't know any better. So DON"T TELL THE COPS YOU KNOW WHO TOOK IT! They seem to be looking for a way out of work!

you know i've seen a show on discovery channel a while back about thieves and it actually had a showing where someone broke into a car shop, kinda similar to this. well the thing about car shops are that the people who own it usually leave the keys near the car (which is a bad idea) since the idea of someone breaking in to steal everything is far from their mind. the best thing for you to do right now is to make sure your shop is safe for further incidents like this. also you can never trust anyone when you're working with them, when it comes down to money and getting paid relationships can and will get broken. you should have a sensored door where you give each future employee a electronic key and whoever opens the door you'll know who went in last because it'll be recorded. make sure no one can get through your shop any other way except through a main door. you can also get a smoking device where if someone does happen to get into your shop and tries to steal cars it'll fog up the whole shop leaving the robber(s) unable to see and leaves them in a position where they can't steal anything and leave. i'm sorry for what happened, but as for your partner since you do have his number i'm pretty sure the cops can trace his number and GPS his a**, if he is the culprit. you just need to have hard evidence on him. think about if you were in his shoes, if you stole a car you'd want to hide it immediately and probably wait a while before you sell it or do anything with it. either that or you'd flee to another city/country and live there(which would be really desperate). if he has family members try to get in touch with them and track him down. again i'm sorry for your loss and hope you guys have great fortune in your investment towards the shop.
