NikoFab
Gentlemen,I created this thread to seperate it from the feeler thread, and make the group purchase a bit easier to manage. After a lot of research, phone calls, emails, etc. we are finally down to business. As I indicated in the feeler post about this group buy (http://www.starquest...howtopic=134121), I felt that 75 units was the ideal to make this group worthwhile. Having worked as much magic as would make David Copperfield proud, I have gotten the fabricator to reduce initial run requirements to a 50 unit purchase, while still keeping pricing reasonable. I will also be donating one of my OEM front air dams for this project to help eliminate CAD and prototyping costs, therefore making this endeavor only reliant upon digital scanning. So what we're looking at is a final firm price of 270.00 plus shipping. In order to adequately take care of up-front costs, deposits will be $200.00. As soon as we have 50 orders/deposits, I can make the purchase of the material and have it shipped to the fabricator. I can also commission the fabricator to begin the tooling process at that point. The tooling process will take approximately 4-6 weeks. The forming and trimming process will take an additional 2 weeks. So we're looking at roughly a 6 to 8 week turn-around after all deposits are in.A quick review of the feeler post: These airdams ARE NOT going to be fiberglass, FRP, or CF. The overwhelming response from the membership is that these materials break, splinter, and crack too easily. These dams will be made from TPO, a thermoplastic that bears similar characteristics (flexible but strong) to the OEM urethane airdams. The advantage of TPO is that it can be vacuum molded, thus bringing the cost down considerably versus injection-molded urethane. Now it's time to grab the family jewels and make this happen! PM me if you want in on the buy. Deposits can be made via paypal (address is below) or money order. PM me if you need my address to send a money order. I will also need the address where you eventually want the air dam shipped to. I think it serves as a fair and just method to everybody involved. This group buy is going to be capped at 50 units. We have 50 people signed up but are still awaiting deposits/payments from just under half of the list. I am going to start an "on deck" list. This list is for those of you who'd like to get in on the group buy, but are not one of the first fifty who signed up. If anyone who's already on the list doesn't provide their deposit/payment by May 1st, those on the "on deck" list will start replacing them (providing deposit/payment is made)...starting with the beginning of the list. Please understand that I'm not trying to create any drama or cause conflict. I'm simply trying to provide incentive to get this thing done. There are some who have had their deposits/payments in for nearly three months, and I must try to honor their patience by getting this ball rolling. The on deck list is on the original post just below the group purchase list. ShadowTSi
Turn around time seems extremely reasonable, very quick for coming up with a completely new part from scratch, major props! I'll be able to place my deposit, if not full payment within the next couple weeks most likely. Definitely looking forward to this! Thanks for putting it together, and here's hoping that we get to 50 people quickly!

Thanks for putting it together, and here's hoping that we get to 50 people quickly! thank you sir! i've learned through other group buys i've put together that you never want to short-call the turn-around time...i try to be realistic...it helps people manage their expectations. my thoughts here are that it will indeed take a bit to get 50 people on board. i know xmas is coming up so i don't want to rush this and keep some of the guys out of the buy who would otherwise be interested. the nice thing is that i've locked in this pricing with the fabricator and the material supplier so that any delay on our part doesn't penalize us. BC_99
Guys keep in mind, buying into this now is insurance for future availability of this part. This first run needs to happen so the molds and stuff can be produced. Once the molds and associated parts are created, it'll be easier in the future for Niko to get these made for the community.. Like Burton said in the other post. OEM airdam supplys will eventually dry up and be no more, then what? If the intial price is a lil higher now, so be it, especially if it assures us of having something reliable to fall back on in the coming years when the OEM urethane airdams are a thing of the past. If you plan on having one of these cars for awhile and would like to have airdams available a few years from now, please consider buying into this. If you plan on having one of these cars for awhile and would like to have airdams available a few years from now, please consider buying into this. BC_99 This is a great point. I agree with BC and Burton...we are nearing a time when all the OEM dams will be gone. And as BC states, this will ensure that we have a source for these dams for the future, because the tooling and the mold will be there for as long as we want. Please also understand that I got to this price point because I'm going to be putting down approx. 1/4 of the over-all cost of the initial run to make this happen (translation...roughly $5500). So in effect, I'm buying the mold. All you guys are paying for is the material, the labor for tooling, labor for forming and trimming, and the shipping. If that wasn't the case, the price would be considerably higher. That's a big commitment from me to the community, but I do it because it will pay off in the long run. I understand that trying to put together 50 or more people is difficult, especially with the fairly small community we have. We're not all made of money, and it's hard sometimes to get in on group buys that have a time limit. So I'm more than willing to wait this out until we have that many people. Guys like D_Veneble and MasterVivi really want in on this, but have extenuating circumstances that prevent them from buying right now...but they want to buy in the first quarter of next year. As such, what do you all say to keeping this thing alive until such time that we can make this happen? What time line would you guys like to consider? I'm open to all opinions so just let me know. I'm in no rush...this isn't for me...I've got three OEM dams right now...this is for you guys. Nick Edited December 8, 2012 by NikoFab
NikoFab
OK Gentlemen, Nobody can say I'm not giving it the old college try here. An interesting turn of events may prove to be a hail mary for us on this endeavor. As you all know, I've been researching this project for the last two months. During my research, I've put feelers and flags out to a lot of people, including old friends. An old buddy of mine from my Army days got back in touch with me last night via email. He's been with the US Army Corps of Engineers for the last ten years or so, and does alot of work with FEMA and other such entities. If you recall, the contruction industry (which the Corp and FEMA are heavily involved in) uses TPO (our media of choice in this project) extensively in various applications. As such, my buddy has several resources by which to acquire TPO, and acquire it at much better price than I myself can get it at retail, or even wholesale. He will be getting back with me on Monday as to whether or not he can help us out. Any-who, the fabricator will still require a minimum 50 unit order, but if my man is able to get it done at the price he pays, then we can get these things done at around the $275.00 mark. Now what do you guys think? Cheers,Nick Edited December 8, 2012 by NikoFab

NikoFab
uhhhh, 1. TPO and urethane aren't the exact same weight2. Yes I have three airdams...one of which is new and is on my car3. The dams will ship from the fabricator (97218), not me4. Remember that shipping also inlcudes the box and packing materials costs, which we don't have yet...can't quote what we don't have, and can't just wrap these in bubble wrap and send them on their way. I'm not trying to be difficult, but I'm not going to quote something that I'm not sure of. Edited December 11, 2012 by NikoFab
NikoFab
Ok here we go guys. Good news...pricing came down like I was trying to do. New price is $270.00 plus shipping. I will not have a firm price on shipping until I find out how much exactly they're going to weigh. I will also need to get pricing on a box to ship them in, as well as packaging materials. The fabricator has agreed to ship directly to each of you instead of shipping all 50 to me, and then me to you. So that will help eliminate wasteful shipping costs. However, judging from other companies, I would assume that shipping and packaging should run around $75.00 or so. As I have more detail, I will relay the information to you guys. NikoFab
Pricing seems perfectly reasonable to me considering the size of packaging and care that goes into packing something up like this! Well I'm of course trying to keep costs down as much as possible. In order to declare item value of this much, shippers require a certain rated box, which of course costs more. To say nothing of trying to find a box for these dimensions! Right now, the cheapeast box I can find is $16.05 each.
