Killtodie
Bought me a can of black flat Plastic Dip spray and trying it out on my head panel. So far, not coming out how I thought it would be. It's cold outside, I'm doing this in the laundry room which I heated up with a space heater but I dont think I let enough time for the header panel to warm up or the spray bottle, got some blotches. Here is what I got so far before it fully dries. http://i.imgur.com/sAVAl.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/pSen0.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/XXdep.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/SSZ9p.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/QzXHs.jpg Dont know how it will look after it dries or how this rattle can differs from the gallon stuff mixed with thinner but I'm hoping the texture would go away. K, after letting it dry for 30 minutes I went in and did another quick coat, it looked much smoother and some of those blotches dissapered. Gonna let it try more and do the back and sides. Lance_S
you might be able to lightly wet sand it and wheel it out Todie. I might come out better and smoother. If it ends up looking like crap you can always respray it but it won't lay down like paint does. A good wet sand and a wheel out might be worth the effort. You could start with 400, 600, 1000, then wheel it out with compound, then finish polish. I don't know how strong the plastic surface is but if it's hard as a rock, you might have to start with 220. BTW, if you stay in there too long you might get high, be careful. lol. Good luck. Edited April 29, 2012 by Lance_S
Killtodie
I dont thin you can sand it all. the stuff peals off like elmers on hands
NikoFab
I'vd used that stuff before on interior body panels. Had to remove it all. Not the best stuff in the world. But it does work well if you want to soft-coat the handles on your tools or something like that.

Speedy2222
when i did my bike, it seems like 10 mins between coats worked good.. and THIN IS KEY. 5-6 coats atleast you can't wetsand it here's some pics from what i did http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k181/Speedy2222/rz350/028.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k181/Speedy2222/rz350/025.jpg Edited April 29, 2012 by Speedy2222
Gamble88
Read the can it says what the room temp needs to be. My friend did this on top of his car and trunk. Friends have done wheels. I've done a few panels on a jeep. It's always come out great. Just follow the directions closely. Light coats, wait inbetween coats, and it has to be warm or it doesn't adhere properly. NikoFab
I hope it works for you. Keep us up to date. It seems to work better on hard surfaces. The interior panels I used it on were soft...probably half the problem right there.
Killtodie
I'm only giving it a try. Just to see how it comes out, good or bad. I still plan on doing the whole car.

Killtodie
No, not the car. I will buy plastic dip by the gallon, thinner and use a paintgun.
Dave-O
I've heard of some good work coming from PlastiDip. Might venture to give it a shot on my Rx7 sometime. I'm also very interested to see how an entire StarQuest looks covered in the stuff.

Killtodie
Soonish, need to get a pneumatic paint gun from a friend, see if a 3 gallon compressor is good enough and buy supplies to get the garage prepped for painting
Killtodie
Update: Looks good on the car, I drove 30 miles to work an noticed one scratch on it from a rock or something, took it down to the primer below. I only put on about 2 layers, my initial layer to cover it all black and a second layer after that. It recommends 5-6, I'm not sure if half these layers are just light sprays where its not fully covered or 5-6 full covering layers.
Burton
3 gallon compressor will not be good enough for a whole car. Might be OK for one panel at a time tho. Why don't you just bedline the whole car? It probably would be stronger and cheaper.
Killtodie
bed liner is not cheap. its like $20 a rattle can where plastic dip is $5 a can. I'm assuming the savings transfer to gallon size as well. as far as a compressor, I can wait and do it slowly. Plan on removing a lot of body panels anyway
Lance_S
When you hang your plastic and prep your garage for paint, pick up some big ac house filters and duct them to you tent for inlet clean air, fan out the back, and dont forget to soak the floor down with water, it will trap any dust. Once again you assume something without doing a quick search to find the true answer... http://www.ebay.com/itm/320753353758?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 That is a link to a gallon kit of urethane bedliner. Less than $90 shipped to your door. A spray gun for bedliner stuff can be had for around $20 too, so for right around $100 you can have everything you need to do bedlining, and it's quality, two part urethane stuff, not the cheap laquer based stuff that comes in rattle cans. You'll use 25 or 30 rattle cans or even more, so that right there is $125+. I'd rather have a quality urethane coating that is designed to be used as a protective coating on cars before I'd use something that is just a general protective coating that may not stand up to the stone chips that urethane bedliner will. Killtodie
Thanks Burton, I never checked the gallon prices. How easy is it to remove that truck lining though, reason I'm doing plastic dip, I want to install my new body panels but cant afford to get them properly painted so I wanna make em match and just dip the whole car and when I can afford to paint and take the dents out I can just peel it all off
