psu_Crash
So the new cosmo install with a set of hankook ventus rs-3 sneakers worked GREAT! But I broke my transmission. Second run of the day I started out, pulled through second and back to first coming out of a tight corner. Revved it out and tried for second ... wouldn't come out of first. So I pulled harder. The shifter came of first gear position but the transmission did not. So now it's stuck in first gear. Shifter will move left to right about half of the normal neutral travel but there is more resistance than normal. Trying to put it into a gear position is no go at all. Like it's hitting a solid block. Clutch is fine so I could at least move to get it on the trailer. Getting it off was a bit more interesting. So I guess I'll be diving into in in the next couple days to figure out what let loose. When it happened it didn't make any bad noises so hopefully it's fixable. Funky Phil
Pull the pan and look at the shift collar and fork. Couldve bent or broken the fork.
psu_Crash
That's the plan. Just have to do some things around the house before I can dive into it today.

psu_Crash
I hope so too IW! But I already found a spare to swap in if it isn't. I'd like to get to it today but the lawn mowing/weed whacking needs to come first. I'm confident that this issue too was caused by operator error. Never stop learning lol

psu_Crash
Pulled the pan and didn't find any pieces. Everything looks fine, but I'll admit I may not know if things were off. Took some pics I'll post up soon.

psu_Crash
Pulled the shifter out and all is well up top. Ok Phil I will have to try that although as it is it won't go through the gears. It's stuck in what should be neutral just below first and first gear is still engaged. I tried to do that before I pulled the pan and had a friend help. When someone is trying to move the shifter I can see the shift fork and rod attempt to move but only a millimeter or so back and forth. This seems suspect to me. What is the large hole above the two shift rods? Should one of them be in there? The lower rod in this picture is what tries to move. I'm no transmission guy at all so the issue may be obvious to some knowing eyes.http://imageshack.com/a/img909/348/GSChO7.jpg A bunch of pics I tried to take of different angles in there.http://imageshack.com/a/img537/2015/89BQJC.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img673/5035/hASeeu.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img540/539/rwXvId.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img910/8159/pRVjWX.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img633/4946/lbKTzk.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img538/7776/j1zG1d.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img911/4605/KnZHMM.jpg http://imageshack.com/a/img540/125/5yNV6X.jpg Edited July 14, 2015 by psu_Crash
kev
That large hole is for the shift fork for 5th and reverse. You need to pull your extension housing. I'm pretty sure your problem lies there. Follow the fsm. It isn't hard to pull the housing
kev
Being that your tranny is locked up it might be difficult to free up the linkage to remove your housing. Let me see if I can upload some pics on how to pull it. Is there any way you can get that thing out I'd first? If you can't get the linkage free you may have to drive out the roll pins in your 1-2 and 3-4 shift forks. You can see them in your photos above. Definitely need to get the housing off to find out the true problem. May be the retainer, may be the linkage rods, may be a fork, Can't really tell yet Oh what year tranny is this? Can you move the shifter left and right? Kevin
psu_Crash
I have tried 6 ways to Sunday to get it out of first. No luck. It's an '86 trans. The shifter does move left and right some. Probably a third of the normal neutral travel. Up an down movement is basically zero.I'll pull the rear housing when I get home tonight.Thank you for the help guys! kev
Here are some photos to help you pull the ext housing: First pull the speedo gear and the steel protector for the driveshaft slip joint....these aren't shown in the photos. Then follow along. http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006711.JPG]Remove the bolts for the shifter housing coverhttp://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00673.JPG Remove the bolts for the extension housinghttp://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00674.JPG Don't forget these two.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00675.JPG Seperate the shifter housing cover...note the two dowel pins.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006771.JPGRemove the coverhttp://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006791.JPG http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006801.JPGRemove this springhttp://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006811.JPGRemove the ball bearing under ithttp://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00688.JPG http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00689.JPG Remove the bolts on both sides of the extension housing. http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00685.JPGRemove the springs and plungers.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006861.JPGMark them accordingly....the plungers are different for each side.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00687.JPG Now the part that will be difficult for you. With the tranny in neutral, you have to move the shifter over as far as you can to the right (looking at the trans in the pic below) and then pull it back. This seperates the main shifter linkage arm from the three shift arms in the trans. You have to seperate this joint in order to get the housing off. The FSM has some good instructions as well. http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006831.JPG Now tap her off.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00691.JPG http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00692.JPG
kev
Here is what you will see. Note the three shifter arms. They must all be in the neutral position to seperate the shift arm. Hopefully with enough wiggling you can get it seperated to get the cover off.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC006931.JPG http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00696.JPG http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00701.JPGNote the shifter arm that you are trying to uncouple from the shift rods.http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00697.JPG If your problem is with the gears themselves, you may be able to free up two of the shifter arms from the forks by removing the roll pins:http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00708.JPG http://www.hotrodders.com/gallery/data/4337/medium/DSC00711.JPG
kev
Let me know if this helps. I have tons more of pictures if needed. I fully tore apart an 88 KM132 tranny and rebuilt it and have photos of pretty much every step of the process. Been wanting to make a thread about it for over a year now but haven't had the time to upload the pics and create the thread. There are well over 300 pics in total.

psu_Crash
We should meet up some time. I head to maryland meets at least once a year. So pulling the tranny tonight (alone) I realized another problem with the fact that it's stuck in gear. I can't turn the driveshaft to get to all the bolts! So looks like I'll have to hang it up for the night until I can get some help. In the meantime I took off the starter and all the tranny bolts but the top 2. Shifter is off too. The things I would do for a lift and a tranny jack! Always scares the hell out of me to be under the car on 4 stands and using a breaker bar to bust things loose. Ahh ... the things we do for the love of our cars
