Magna MPI won't fit

Recommended Posts

So I got an unmodded intake from a member on here. Sat on it for a while and now going to install it. Took it to the machine shop buddy i know to get the flanges changed and the coolant passage swapped over. The other bonus is I have an M28 cast head which has the larger coolant passage so I don't need to modify that. All good things.

Well the issue i'm running into now is the lower intake plunum won't sit flush against the head. It's hitting the top of the steering box. Even to get to this point i had to remove the P/S lines from the box and brake booster. I know i'm going to have to work practically the 90* bend just to get that to fit. Below are some pictures, who has put one of these in? I must be missing something there. Please feel free to call me

This one is pointing to a brass not on top of the steering box that has a flathead adjustment screw. Tried to back it in as much as possible to no avail

This is how it rests

Could that be the tr style magna,it looks like the one that's on a seller's car name droacher .

You have a link to the car he's selling, I did a quick search and can't find anything. I'm desperate to get this on i have working but at this point i'm afraid i'd have to shorten the intake runners, somehow relocate the steering box or perhaps heat the whole assembly up and pull it together with a strap. None of which I want to do.

That is definitely the long tube version that won't clear (as you know) Like Phil said maybe you can shim the drivers side mount? Just make sure you do it enough so that when the engine rocks on the mounts it won't hit the PS box.

I would strongly suggest at least a driver's side poly mount if you go that route.

Phil can hook you up with one of those too ;)

Edit: BTW that adjustment screw on top of the steering box should not be as tight as you can get it. That can potentially lead to your steering locking up on you. That needs to be snug but still loose enough to allow your steering wheel to return to center.

Well, almost worked, we cleared out initial problem. Then the brake booster got in the way, we solved that by taking the back spacer plate out and adjusting the system. Overall it won't work, we're talking 2" full inches of spacers and even then the intake over extends the hood by that 2". So i'm back to cutting the runners. Anybody have experience with that?

I bought that long runner manifold from droachrr and i could put up some pics of it if you need them. My engine is out of my car right now so I've not been able to test fit it but he said he had in mounted up in his car.. I'm not ready for mpi just yet so if I come upon another manifold I like better I might not use the long runner magna. But it can be done!
