101PROPOSE
hello members, i have finally received the sample mk1 camgear. this gear has new machined steel outter gear(not modified stock replacement gear) and billet anodized(red or blue) finish aluminum inner piece with six big stainless steel allen bolts. i will be installing this gear and testing it out on my 87 starion. can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to remove the stock gear and install this gear without going through removing the chain cover off and etc? i will start the GP once i test fit and make sure there is no issues. check out the pics below and if you have any questions about the gear, please let me know. thanks, 101 http://www.101propose.com/star/GEAR1.JPG http://www.101propose.com/star/GEAR2.JPG http://www.101propose.com/star/GEAR3.JPG http://www.101propose.com/star/GEAR4.JPG http://www.101propose.com/star/GEAR5.JPG Edited January 9, 2009 by 101PROPOSE

Should be able to do it with only the valve cover off.
MainstreaM
Use an impact wrench to get the old gear off, torque wrench to put the new one on. Kane

101PROPOSE
hello members, today i took off the valve cover and tried to remove the stock cam sprocket but no good. taking the big mounting bolt wasnt a problem but taking the gear off the chain was hard. when i pulled up the chain, there was barely enough space to move the chain over a tooth but not enough to slide out the gear. there is a little metal piece right below the gear, looks like it is holding the gear up in place when the mounting bolt is off. can i take this off? has anyone done this without removing the chain cover and etc..? thanks, 101 http://www.101propose.com/star/MK1-CAMTEST1.JPG Edited January 13, 2009 by 101PROPOSE
CaliConquestAlex
You should be able to tilt the gear a bit and remove the gear, but if u need more slack you can slide a long flathead inbetween the timing chain and depress the tensioner to give you more slack in the chain. Hope this helps.

pitboss
Not sure if this will matter but you want to try and do this at TDC. Might not matter here though.
CaliConquestAlex
Probably easier to do it at TDC, but it shouldn't be a requirement. Since the dowel synchronizes the cam gear with the cam, it shouldn't matter. With the dowel pin on top at TDC, it's much easier to remove the cam gear, IMO. MAZINGAQUEST87TSI, previous ones i have sold on ebay are made here based on the same specs(but with a little different design) as this new one and the new ones are being mass-produced by a factory in overseas. thanks,

superscan811
Hi, just wondering what is happening with this GP as I am interested in purchasing a couple of these Adjustable Cam Gears... Cheers.
Technology
Good question. Just to note, maybe it was already pointed out, that with any adjustment to the cam timing, you will have to reset your ignition timing. Not a problem, but anyone who gets this will want to do that.
