I would like to know what mods are available for my 88. O would also like to know if there is some way I guess to do a poor mans mod. Also, is it safe to gut the cats, I mean will it effect the car negatively if that happens

I will be the first to say it... SEARCH!

Wrong section to post your question. But search performance and advanced mechanic section

I'm running gutted cats with no ill effects. (it even passes emissions with just 1 cat)

You can always get a manual boost controller and turn up your boost to 15 without doing anything to the engine but i will STRONGLY recommend you make sure its running properly first. Make sure your timing is right, make sure your air filter isn't clogged all that good stuff.

One popular mod is to convert your MAS to a 1g DSM turbo MAS.

All of this being said; the forum is your friend. Read and understand about any mod before buying or attempting it

Fast. Cheap. Reliable. You can only pick two.

Best advice you'll get, or you'll soon either be posting up looking for a motor, or to part it out.

First things first, make sure the car's running correctly and all maintenance is up to date before you go modding anything. From there, and opened up exhaust and a set of hardpipes are a good start. Money and labor times go up from there.

The first mod I would do to an automatic is 3.90 gears. Shelby swears it transforms the driving characteristics of the autos, and having driven an automatic quest for nearly 20 years, I can see how much it would help. I have 3.90s in my 5 speed '88 and it's a little low at this tire size. But I think you'd like the difference. It would also serve to reduce the stress on every drive train component prior to the rear end since it would give the engine and trans more mechanical advantage.

Some of you lack hospitality. What? Did you forget you were once "noobs"?

If this is your first SQ, I suggest you first read the FAQ section, in particular paying attention to making it run reliably first. Make sure it's in tip top shape before attempting anything "go fast". Biggest mistake a new owner of turbo car makes is thinking they can just raise the boost til kingdom come and then shortly after the car goes BOOM!

After reading up a bit on the FAQ section, you'll have a better idea of where you stand. Post your location, maybe local members can be helpful.

and by the way, welcome! ;)

i'l disagree with this , it depends on your deff of FAST,

CHEAP , FAST & RELIABLE can be done if you have the means , experiance and ability to do it properly ;)

as for your auto car OP , 2 things to do after the car is in 100% runing condition , and tranny bands adjust'd and new atf

2.5" exh all the way back

and 3:90 rear gears

you'l think some one swap'd cars with you , and you came out on top :)

once you got thats DONE AND IT'S NOT ALL THAT EXPENSIVE OR HARD TO DO , go on WITH OTHER THINGS

sorry for the caps :(

As mentioned, adj. the bands, get a valve body mod kit and it possible change to the 84-87 non intercooled tranny. These had a smaller torque convertor with a lower stall and flex plate hole pattern for that smaller convertor and the boost comes in much earlier because of that lower stall. You don't need lower gears if you get boost at lower rpms. If you get into 4th and have boost are you really wanting to go 150mph at have your rpms that high? The speed limit around here is 55. Those trannys are everywhere for just about free. What you have with that is a lower rpm engine load that makes building boost at highway speed there instantly as soon as you push the pedal down. IMO the 88/89 stall speed makes those cars SUCK and until you do a swap on one like I did you'll not know it was like night and day difference.

even with the higher stall convertor that will not change the mid range cruise rpms , i wasn't aware that the older units had that much of a stall diff , combin'd with the 3:90's that should give you every thing you need , i have driven the auto with both 3:54's and 3:90s and cruiseing arround town witht he 3:54's at 45 or so sucks unless you down shift , with the 3:90s i never down shift no need to , and top end was still more then you need

I am in need of a transmission right away, just had it rebuilt bc i do not have the tools "lift, ect." but it went out within 40 miles of driving it after the guy built it, with no warranty, big mistake on my part with $ i will never get back!!. I have an 89tsi, what are the mods if any would I have to do to put 84-87 trans and torque converter in? you say they do not have oil coolers. does this mean i just take it out... or swap any parts? I want this car to be a daily driver for me and i don't plan on doing any major changes. Trying to save money now with the gas prices the way they are. So these transmissions are cheep and readily available? I will navigate this site to find one, but if you know where to get one could you let me know? I am getting ready to spend 1600$ for another build if i do not have any other options.

Thanks

Wattle

you don't need any lift :) but a floor jact is a must,, and you can do the rebuild your self is no hard parts are need'd for under $400 , only real special tool you need is a clutch pac sring compressor and you can make one out of some thread stock and some flat iron , as for a seal tool use 3/16 steel brake line and spring wire , cut about 2" of thin steel wire fold it in the middle into a U , place the straight ends into the piece of brake line and crimp tight leave about 1/2 " or so sticking out,, works perfictly to slide the oring seals into the pistons as you assemble the piston assemblys

the frt pump puller same thing 18" of 3/8"thread stock nut on the end and washer and big heavy socket,,it'l pop right out , just make 2 of them so you cam pull on each side evenly

you have a step by step manual showing you how,, and if you can put an engine togather you can rebuild this auto

a magna intake is a multiport system off an AUDM car (australlian) called a mitsubishi magna. It came with a FWD version of our engine (non turbo). It requires some modification to work in the RWD application but it does bolt to the cylinder head. They ARENT cheap though....Unmodded ones run 300+ with modified ones running 600+ (On top of that you'll need to run custom engine management because your Starquest ECU cant deal with 4 injectors. Its probably a 1500 to 2000 dollar venture to go that route.

The 1g mas as well as any other performance part can be found in the parts for sale section from time to time, as well as (if you know what youre looking for) local junkyards

I found that a cut off wheel, some basic metric tools,a 6pack and a few hours will help any car! ;)

There was a 1g with plug on ebay 2 days ago.
