Anyone running a 2j with the stock auto tranny?

Is anyone running this combo? If so, how do the years feel? Short? Long? How is highway cruise? Does it suffer frOm performance? Hp limits? Can I make up a paddle shifter setup to change gears manually with paddles? Will it hold up driving it with the paddles?

Sorry for all the questions, seriously considering the swap but five and six speeds are expensive for the 2jz platform.

This,

Lance

I don't know anything about the autos...but the r154 is a BEEFY 5 speed and will support 700hp in stock form. It is not nearly expensive as the 6 speed..just food for though...Vettekiller, Serpent, BOHO, Jeph_tsi, Phinko,...we are all running the r154 tranny.

Thanks B, yeah I was thinking about the r154 but I also thought the 2j comes with the auto and it will save a grand on the build not having to switch to an r154. I also thought the paddle shifting would be fun and it's really quick. I have read with a better torque converter the auto will hold 500 hp which is all I need. Even with a 4 speed it should be crazy quick. Just wondering with our rear end how well the gears would work and what rpm at cruise would be.

Yeah it would be neat. Like I said I don't knowanything about the auto's...I'm sure there are valve body mods for them...Even if you just put a ratchet shifter and a 2200 stall on it it would be nice.

there has been a lot of interst in the 2JZ to the GM auto trans lately, I spoke to vette killer about it, all the kits to fit the GM to the JZ are either not in stock or over $1000.00 bucks because they do it stupid with a wild flexplate

But if you want an affordable auto trans, I would have thought the C4 ford would be the right choice, just to keep the tunnel in good shape, but thats just me

I found the right tool I been looking for and I have the problems solved for the GM adapter, I will be putting it together as soon as I get some other stuff out of the way

I just didnt see why you would need the big, heavy GM auto trans over the light compact Ford

Ironside,

I have done a ton of research as of late. Give me a shout and I can fill you in. The short of it is, if you keep the turbos stock in the beginning the only upgrade you will want is the line pressure upgrade which runs about $500 bucks. It makes the auto shift like right now (15/100's of a second). The shifting is all done by electronics, no actual gate, so you should be able to modify your stock shifter to send out the proper signals. It's just a matter of sending a 12v positive signal to the selonoid on the tranny which selects the proper gear. Not a big deal. I am planning on going with now shifter at all. The center console area will be completely replaced. All of my shifting will be done from paddles on the wheel, no shifter at all which will be cool. Can you say big cup holders, lol? With the bigger supra injectors (stock are 440, the supras are 550) and a turbo psi bump up to 12, you can make 330 HP or so. If you pull the twins and go big single for big power you have to put the racing clutches in the tranny. The stock auto will hold around 400 hp with the line pressure mod. For more than that you need the bigger clutch pack.

My plan is to run it with the 54 over the summer and try and do the swap next winter. The cool thing about the paddles is that with a push of a button you can run it like a regular auto or shift it manually. Get rid of the shifter and have a huge center console.

Here is the link for the upgraded valve body that will make the shifts super quick.

Here is the link for the supra stick which is the computer that will allow you to completely control the shifting points and set it up for manual shifting through the paddles.

And here is the actual paddle system. This, of course, is just one, there are others on the market.

http://www.tunersgroup.com/Online_Store/Works_Bell_Paddle_Shifter_NEO_Universal.html

this setup isn't the cheapest option. I am also looking into buying a used steering wheel that has paddles already built into them which would eliminate the works, bell paddle shifter and would be less money. Like this.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2008-R56-Mini-Cooper-S-Steering-Wheel-Paddle-Shifters-/300650725125?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item46002dff05

or this

or this

So basically you need the computer which runs $350.00 and the valve body upgrade which is $530.00 for the steering wheel you can get one that is used on ebay for $100.00 or go the works route which is more at $530.00 and you would need a wheel if you don't have an aftermarket one.

Most likely, for the money, I would go with the computer and the valve body and then pick up a used steering wheel on ebay and be done. It's still a grand, which I don't have right now, but it's fun to think about. What you end up with is this.

Not the greatest vid but you get the idea.
