  1. Ok I took a look and took some pictures. Haven't had time or energy to actually see if she tracks straight but there are no cracks in the paint at the gooseneck. Nothing looks tweaked or damaged. I still have to stand her upright and see but I'm thinking probably nothing there.
  2. That's been something of an issue for me as well. I haven't been able to find information on VA. Other than a VERY vague bit from the DMV site. The insurance company actually told me that because it's VA and the bike is older than 5 years that no salvage title would be necessary that the title would remain just a regular title. But I don't see how that makes ANY sense. Unless they are catering to the Ins. companies in VA... I'm not sure anyone out there have some experience there and able to pipe up?
  3. That's the other thing I didn't cover. The fluids. There are no fluids to change other than the oil. It cut off nearly as soon as I went down so there is little to no risk of fuel in the oil. I might try to take it for a short ride here tomorrow. I have been told by the ins company that if I do do the buy back they won't insure the bike. I won't be keeping it myself I guess I will have to sell it afterward. I will have to write the adjuster and see if I can get a bit more out of the bike. I don't know how much they will squirm on it though but the adjuster did call today wanting to know my decision. I have looked at a few bikes now and think I have found a couple I like so far. Though I am not sure ow much I trust the salesman I talked to. I might stop at the other dealership tomorrow after I get back from work.
  4. I can't ride it. The brake pedal was ripped from the sprocket cover so the rear brakes are inop. The shifter has been snapped off as well so I can't put it in gear. The handlebars feel a little loose up and down. Otherwise I don't think there would be much of a problem with then bike. I have a spare tank which I had planned on putting on it anyways and the cover I wanted to replace with flat black ones as well. I don't particularly want to put anything into parts yet until I know something more definite but I am definitely torn on the insurance company's offer. I think the 1400 buy back Is a bit high since they are totaling it out. If it costs more that 75% of the value to fix it, logic would dictate that it is only worth 25% of it's value correct? And that number would be more like $1000 not the $1400 they have given so far... Maybe my thinking is off in this...
  5. Ok here are the pics of it as it sits currently: http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2986.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2987.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2993.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2992.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2991.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2990.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2989.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/Sportster%20Accident%20Aftermath/IMG_2988.jpg Now I'm seriously kicking around the idea of buyback. The damage isn't that bad and the engine sounds better now that I reved it a little. My worry though is what the title is going to look like afterwards. Do I need to file for a salvage title? Do I need to get it inspected afterwards? What needs to be done, etc. As for parts, the stuff it needs isn't that bad really. The sprocket cover and brake setup might run a bit and a fender I can find for a decent price. Paint might not match but that can be fixed later. The tank has a small dent and I have a sportbob tank I was planning on installing anyways. The shifter and pegs aren't too hard to get. But again my big concern is what's unseen and what the title situation will be afterward.
  6. Well I guess the engine is fine. I ran it a bit revved it up and the ticking/knocking went away. Maybe I should have someone come take a look at the frame see if it's worth fixing or if I should dump it and go for a new bike. I'll be going to the dealership as well seeing what they have in stock.
  7. Here's the one pic I have of the accident itself:
  8. Yeah I did NO damage to the guard rail or the pole that supported it. If the knocking were a valve then it would be coming from the head area this sounds like it's coming fromt he lower casing that's why I'm worried. At this point though, I don't know that I can really afford to get it fixed if I DID buy it back. The thing I find odd though is that they are going to pay out $5200 when they adjuster said between $3500 and $4000 to repair. Something reeks like last weeks fish but I don't knwo how to cal them out on it...
  9. Ok I haven't read all the replies yet but I will clarify the progression of the accident. Riding up an onramp to I-64w. 30-35 mph. Felt I wasn't making the turn properly and the rear felt odd so I straightened up the bike and began braking. This put me on the shoulder where I caught a chunk of loose fine gravel and dry grass clippings. As soon as I did the bike went out from under me. I couldn't have been at more than 25 mph at that time. Thinking back, it felt like I just fell over almost. The front wheel went under the guard rail coming to rest against the post holding the guard rail. Now the damages I have noted so far- fender bent and scraped, handlebars feel a little looser than before (up and down) contolrs on left handlebars scraped, shifter arm snapped off, brake pedal ripped from the sprocket cover, dent in gas tank, and of course nearly all pegs along with the highway bars were bent or scraped. Now I started her as I said and there's a knocking almost sounds like a rod knock from the front of the crankcase. My knowledge of bikes is still limited but I obviously know how to turn a wrench after he Conquest. I will post pictures of the accident and the current condition of the bike later today.
  10. Long story short it's been a hectic and harrowing week. I laid my bike down Saturday afternoon. It was a low speed accident and I was the only one involved. The bike was an '02 Harley Sportster XLH 1200. Caught some gravel and dried grass clippings on an onramp at speed and lost it. That's the general gist of the story there. So the appraiser came out 2 days ago. He looked the bike over and determined $3500-$4000 to repair. Insurance company called and deemed it a total loss. Now a bit of background, I put $1600 down on the bike. I have been paying $140 or more a month since April for the payments on the loan. I was a single payment away from finishing my insurance for the year. I just got the call from the insurance company giving me final numbers. I have a $500 deductible. Here's the breakdown: Settlement Breakdown ACV: $5,609.00 Tax Amount: 168.27 Fees: 19.00 Deductible: 500.00 Gross Settlement: 5296.27 Owner Retain ACV: $5,609.00 Tax Amount: 168.27 Salvage: 1393.00 Deductible: 500.00 Gross Settlement: 3884.27 Now I started the engine earlier today and it sounds like it's got a knock towards the front. I might be able to find parts for the bike fairly cheap but I will still likely have to pay for the work and inspection. So my question is, what are your thoughts on what I should do? Keep the bike, fix it, and ride again or let it go, try to work my tail of, and attempt to save the $ for another down payment for another new bike? And is there anything I should know about the process and adjustments here or are these guys shooting straight with me and staying on the up and up?
  11. From what I was told on the second vehicle (the one with the molding with fabric matching the top) the molding was put on to cover the rust which definitely doesn't give me a warm fuzzy as to what's under there if that is the case. But I have to start somewhere and this crap isn't going to fix itself that's for sure.
  12. Ok I snapped some shots of the worst of the issues. here are a few pics: http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2544.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2548.jpg Not the rust runs down the side I know will come off with rubbing compound (done it already on that first vehicle) http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2549.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2550.jpg Now I tried to get shots of the swirl scratches but in the dark they didn't come out as well (I was lazy and didn't feel like pulling a vehicle out into the sun I'll be taking at least one out tomorrow so I might get more shots then): http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2560.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2559.jpg And for those that can't figure out what my fleet actually is: http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2551.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2553.jpg http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc165/Socially_Unacceptable/The%20Fleet/IMG_2556.jpg That's what I'm in charge of down here. I didn't get pics of it but there's also a full size bus (47 passenger) here that I'm also in charge of.
  13. I was planning on giving the Meguire's stuff I had used on the 'quest back in '09 at the Branson nats a shot and seeing if it does the job. I have an orbital buffer ready to go as soon as I get some pads for it. And what about chips? Any recommendations for a decent repair for small rock chips and dings? I was going to try the touch up paints that are out there but want to consult with you guys first before wasting time and money. So far I'm not having much luck with these quick repairs but I need the fleet to look good. Especially when we end up doing things like presidential shuttles like we did the other week.
  14. They have been getting wax at least according to the detailing crew. I will be on top of that a little more though. I will be making sure they get wax probably more than twice a year since these vehicles get a lot more use than the average daily commuter. At least the sedans get more use. I think at least one of our vehicles is an '03 or '04 with nearly 300K on it now. I've got a buffer I'll have to give that a shot maybe that's why the stuff I got didn't work. The detailer didn't use a buffer on it he was doing it by hand. I'll have it redone tomorrow with a buffer see how it turns out. I'll also try taking a few shots of the cars see if I can get pics of the spiderwebbing for you. I'm fairly certain it's not paint flaws or cracks though. It doesn't look like cracks just like little thin spider webs all around the vehicle paint circling wherever the light source is.
  15. It's not rust holes it appears to be surface rust. I'll have to snap some shots to show what I mean.
