Well i have finally decided that i am tired of getting negative comments on my car looking like it needs ALOT of help. The biggest area it needs it is in the paint department. I remember back about 10 years ago i saw an article in hotrod about doing your own paintjob for $98 and i was hooked. Been interested in the concept ever since. I feel now is the time. Going tomorrow to buy all of the supplies i will need and plan on changing up the car a little bit! Stay tuned and hopefully this car will look a little better very soon!

I've seen articles on it too. Didn't look bad...at least from a distance. Make sure to tape things off, and thin the paint (I think that was the key). Gotta ask though....what's wrong with the red? Passenger side looks just fine. You sure you're not taking a step backwards?

it's hard to tell in pics, it wont hold a shine more than 5 mins, any touch of it leaves your hands red most of the time, it was a quick 5 min respray at one point in its life. I'll have closer to 500 into this paintjob due to needing all of the equipment and some dents removed. The goal with doing this is to make it a good 10' car, and shiny!!! lol

And i will be rolling it on.

i think that pic was taken a few weeks after i had waxed it, here's a better representation of what i am working with

Have you ever rubbed it out? I bought an old Chevy Monza years ago that looked like flat red primer. I rubbed it out and waxed it 4 or 5 times and boy did it shine. Made pretty good money off that car when I sold it.

Guess I should clarify. I rubbed it out then waxed it. Several days later rubbed it out then waxed it again....and so on.

Some of those roll on jobs look good, but to get them to look really good takes lots of sanding and polishing after the fact.

Then, what do you do in a year or two when the rolled on rustoleum starts failing and chalking up worse than the bad respray it has now?

What about if you decide to do a real repaint later? All that stuff will have to be stripped off.

You say you plan to spend $500 or more and remove dents and such... why not save a little more coin and get it done with something that will last better and be easier to do? Hell, even a Maaco job will last longer than a roll on job, and they'll do resprays for as little as $200 if you do all the prep and they're running a sale.

Got a somewhat clean garage and an air compressor? Buy a $40 HVLP gun, and $200 worth of real automotive paint and have the paintjob done in an afternoon instead of roll on, cure, sand, roll on, cure, sand, roll on, cure, sand..... I've seen dudes waste numerous weekends just to make $50 in paint look good. What's your time worth to you?

I'm really not trying to be a Debbie Downer, and hope you don't take offense to this... I've just seen a lot of guys do this and wish they had just waited and saved longer to have it done right.

Well, more power to ya then. The prep you'll learn will be the same no matter what you do. However, if you're trying to learn about automotive painting by rolling on rustoleum, you're not really learning about automotive painting. Living in an apartment deffinately makes it difficult to have a place to give it a real paint job. Got any buddies with a garage and compressor you can maybe throw them a couple cases of beer and use it for the weekend?

what would you recommend for a hammer and dowel set?

Really just a basic hammer and dolly set will work fine. tcpglobal.com sells some sets that are reasonably priced, and they also carry about any autobody product or tool you need for about the best prices around. I know someone mentioned $400 plastidip, and you are doing this on the cheap, but thru that site, you could get a gallon of base and a gallon of clear in any OEM color back to 1929 shipped to your door for about $400. If you want to use one of their 144 aftermarket colors, then it's even cheaper. I've gotten my fillers, primers, and paints for basic jobs from there and had about $600 in materials shipped to my door. $600 and some time is a pretty good price for a basecoat/clearcoat paint job. I know you're not interested in that because you're doing it on the cheap, but I figured I'd throw that out there for anyone else who might be seeing this.

Autobody Toolmart and J&L Tools also carry a lot of body tools for good prices and will have nice hammer and dolly sets for a reasonable price. You won't need a huge set... maybe 3 hammers and 2 dollies. Hell, if you're just looking at doing body work sporadically, and just basic stuff, you could probably get away with 2 hammers and a dolly. Just start with the basic stuff. there's all kinds of specialty hammers and dollies, but the basic kits will good enough to handle 90% of dents or dings you might be working out.

I did the Rustoleum job on my GSX that was multiple colors when I bought it as a project. It is a very tidious process. It is cheap and if done with care it comes out pretty good as long as you wet sand it and buff it up real nice when all the coats are applied. I'd say you need a garage because the paint takes a while to dry between the pair of coats that are supposed to be rolled on.
