Metric-man
What do you use to recharge the washable air filter on your car ? Some people say WD-40 others say engine oil or transmission fluid While still others ask the question why mess with a resuable filter just use a paper filter? And some will question why can't you afford the correct oil ? So what do you use or don't use is the question here.
Burton
I just buy the proper oil. I'm sure there's something that works just as well, but I stick with what is called for by the manufacturer, even if it does cost a couple extra bucks. I don't know if the washable filters offer as much benefit as they claim, but I've seen noticeable performance and gas mileage improvements with them so I have to say they are deffinately better than just a OEM style filter. Of course, no matter what filter you use, the biggest thing is making sure you wash/replace your filter regularly. A filter with bad airflow is no good whatever filter it is. Caliber308
I use a washable Cone Air filter....But have never had the need yet to wash it. I ran a K&N on my 1st Gen Mas set up...Didn't care for it. All this oil spraying on the Air filter makes me suspect as to the "real" air flow your getting. In all the years, and all the High Performance cars I've owned. I never sprayed a Air filter with oil. Bill if you have 1000 miles or more using the filter or have had it sitting on the vehicle for 6 months or more you should clean it and re oil it. The air filter element and its paring with oil goes way back so much that it can seriously be referred as OLD SCHOOL Bill did you ever see the 50's Plymouths? Their filters sat in motor oil and are known as oil bath filters. I'm pretty sure you cannot use motor oil on a K&N or a foam filter, but it is a petrolatum derivative. Metric-man
Marvel Mystery Oil Where did you hear that from ? Have you used it ? Does it work ? I've been looking at the DSMS sheets for both the K&N filter oil and Marvel Mystery Oil It seems to have all the same ingredients except MM has a winter green scent; of course you're never to breath either one, because they are made from naphtha, paraffinic benzene, and mineral oil base. I've used MM in my gas tank to help preserve my injectors from the corn squeezins (ethanol) that they adulterate our gasoline with now. But I've read it is not compatable with methanol. DryBear
You could try the AEM Dryflow filter - doesn't use any oil at all.
