Kreal
Car is getting fuel. But no spark. 1987 TSI. Looking for a list of basic reasons why it would not have spark. Replaced (with used) coil, knock box, ecu. What else could be the culprit here? Fuseable links, distributer, dist cap, rotor. Anything else anyone may suggest? Thanks !! Kreal
Pickup coil Thanks for your reply. Where is this pick up coil located? Dont think I've heard of one before. Just regular coil
vbrad511
It's in the distributor. Are you sure you put on a good knock box?

ucw458
Ok, here's a few things I would check if I were you. 1 Check for power. With ignition switch in the on position put a voltmeter on the positive side of the coil and ground. You should get voltage. If not check the fuseable link next to the battery labeled ECI. #1 link goes to ignition switch and #2 link goes to the ignitor power relay. 2 If you got power there then probe the red wire going into the ignitor. You should have 12 volts there. If not the relay is bad. 3 If all that is good then disconect the wires on the negative side of the coil. Lay the high tension coil lead near a ground but not touching it. Approximatly 1/8" away. Then with ignition on ground then release the neg side of the coil. The coil should fire a spark. If not the coil is dead. 4 unplug the distributor and check the ohms on the pickup coil. Using an ohm meter the resistance should be 920-1120 ohms. If not the pickup coil may be bad. 5 Remove the rotor and check for arcing on the center bolt underneath it. If there is arcing evidence and the underside of the rotor looks burned then it's a defective rotor. Replace it. 6 if all that stuff is good then you may have a bad ignitor. ucw458
Just to be clear I'm looking at my 87 book so if there are any typos or wrong wire colors I'm unaware of it. The only relay I can find for the ignitor in my book is the ECI control relay. That one is located above the ECU. The wiring diagram shows a red wire from the relay leading to the ignitor and ECU. That wire traces through the relay to the sub fuse link #2 which is the one labeled ECI. The power being fed to the relay from link #2 is a black wire that should be at the top left of the connector. That wire looks to be always hot, even with ignition off. If you don't have power there then it's most likely the fuseable link that's dead. If you look at page 154 of this link you can see the diagram I'm refering to. http://www.starquestgarage.com/manuals/service/conquest/1988/88_conquest_service_manual_-_group_26_-_electrical.pdf Edited March 28, 2010 by ucw458

Anyway ignition off we have votage ( with a test lamp) upper left terminal- Scrounging the parts car now for a relay. I always thoought that was a fuel pump relay. ucw458
I belive that relay handles the fuel pump, ignitor and ECU. Glad you got it.
