headlight conversion

I love the looks of our StarQuests-except when the headlights are up. There has to be someone with the ability to make a new unit the just bolts in place of the stock ones. There looks to be enough room for a projector style low and high beam, and there should be some kind of acrylic cover with the same shape as the headlight-meaning that looking at the car from the side, there would be no change in the profile. I have seen that picture on the web of that Quest with the 3000GT lights, but I want the same shape as the original lights. (no good at bodywork either :P ) What do you guys think?

You know what, I have thought about this before.  Except I would like to keep the flip-up function.  But what would be different would be using a high and low beam projectors like you said.  I would try to make it so when you hit the light switch the headlights you only pop open about 4" so you could just see 2 little projectors there.  I think that would be way cool.  Is there any way to make the headlights stop only part way up like that?

Sure.

;D

I've seen that mod done on Toyota Supras.

I'd prefer that than to changing the Conquest-Starion into a GT3000 and removing the "flip" head lights.

Come on, if you grew up in the 80s (instead of born in the 80s) you'd know how much every little boy wanted those "flip up" lights. There are hardly any cars left with this style of headlight (maybe the NSX and a couple others) and you wanna get rid of 'em. I don't get it? :-/

I didn't mention that I also have a 1991 Daytona Shelby Iroc which has the pop up lights (last year of pop ups on the Daytona line) I like the light on that just fine-they don't stand up like 3 feet when they are on :) I just think the lights stand up too high. Besides, it's not like I will actually get the conversion that I want :(

i think that the original look on the car  is awesome, but i think that if some one alters the look is also kool! as long as they dont go over board... that quest w/GT3000 had also moded the tail lights as well (supra's tail lights), it's something new, it really didn't look that bad either, i guess its kool to see some people with ideas on this car... it's over 10yrs old & still finding different ideas to improve or making it look different...

The car that everyone seems to be talking about was for sale ($3500) in auto trader about three months ago.  The car was blue, had low miles, 3000gt headlights, Toyota Supra tail lights and MR2 side vents.  Much prefer the stock look myself.

yeah I think the supra taillights looked way out of place on an 80's sports car, just didnt fit with the style.  THe MR2 vents were fugly too.  The headlights looked like they werent aligned very well with the body too.

it would be great if someone could incorperate the header panel and

light covers together as one peice, made from fiberglass. and cut some

rectangular openings for mounting lights.

i cant stand those pop ups, just more junk to be removed from the front

of the car.

yea, i was thinking plexiglass covers or lexan and then put projection beams in it (the h4 kind) from like a VW or something, i hate the pop up lights myself it totaly dates the car. when i turn them on i feel like i should have a mullet.

one way to do it is to make a mold of the header panel and pop up covers and shape to desired form. but fiber glass gets expensive.

i personally would take out the lights and pop up motor, or just unplug it so u can still crank them open for quick bulb replacement, and cut an opening to fit lights. sorry to say it but lights like on an acura would work, 2 small holes.

but i lack the time to do so. only if cars were made out of wood, my carpentry skills could come in handy.

The pop up lights are just one more thing to go wrong with the car. I was thinking of doing this mod as soon as I bought my quest. If you got a Playstation 2, check out the game Tokyo Extreme Racer. There is a Starquest on there and you can do all kinds of body mods including flush mount headlights. Pretty cool!

You can find almost anyone who's decent with fiberglass can make you a "mold" that you can install some projector beam driving lights into.  The Integra headlights won't fit however, they're too wide I believe.  (They're a solid piece actually, not two seperate housings)

My thought was just plexiglass with lights mounted behind it.  Using a heat gun and a mold to shape it with you can form it in almost any style you want.

I have seen something similar that was a kit for the porsche 944....the headlights may very well be similar....I'll look for the site I saw it on.
