Jdm style you might not have seen - looking for opinions

Warning this will be picture heavy.

Some of you might know what I want to show you guys but Im guessing there will be more that havnt seen this style of jdm. There arnt many builds like this stateside and those that do mostly blend in with the stance crowd since both styles main component is very low ride height. But this thread is not about ride height, since thats a never ending argument to start. I fall into the functional side of cars here in socal so Ill never drive my car as low as these. Im looking to adapt other styles from these cars onto ours, when my car is running good :D, and Id like to here what others think. There are two variations I think fit our cars in some ways, shakotan which is much more simple, and bosozoku which are insane to look at replicas of silhouette racers from the 80s.

First off is wheels, almost every properly built shakotan whip has some rare and expensive deep dish wheels. Thing is stock we use 16s and 5 lugs, most wheels of this era are smaller and 4 lug. Im fine with my 4 shp rears but having two sets of shoes would be cool.

Bigger stock look rear spoiler? Yes for me

Front mount oil cooler? Not for me but we have room for it, this is a very popular mod with both bosozoku and shakotan. I love the sharknose look no idea how that could fit onto a SQ. The rear lower spoiler you see on some of these cars is called a slit spoiler, gotta import one from japan but its not as expensive as you might think(for any car parts from japan).

Another slit spoiler/diffuser style

This is one I really want on my car, the first week I bought the car it was one of those weird ideas I got to have three tailights that look like a solid bar. Not sure if this one lights up, lots of guys will put placeholders where the liscense plate goes and put it lower on the car all bent up.

Some stateside copy cat like me

Blast pipes are also a huge part of bosozoku from short to long to out the hood and over the car. Japanese people are crazy.... I plan to have removable giant 3 inch pipes for shows and much shorter tips for daily use

I started this as a feeler Ive got lots more pics and info for those interested. There are many more components like exhaust tone, interior, paintjobs, engine swaps, etc but I tried to stick to what might work on a SQ.

OPINIONS?

Why would someone want a snow plow on the front of their car?

Or 1,000 lbs of bolt on's to divert air?

That red and black #11 car has fender flares....but pizza cutter front tires.....?

Small 12''-14'' tires dont make your car fast in the..... high mph range...so why????

Some of those cars just look very.....dumb......which is why those pics where taken....lol....to laugh at them dumb cars with your friends at home

MY OPINION! Sorry I hate these cars....lol

Everyone has the right to their opinion. And I get that these types of cars are very in your face, they force a reaction. That I think is part of the point and why they are built the way that they are. I think another thing that allows for people to build these crazy cars is just how the japanese take things to the extreme in most hobbies they have not just cars.

At the end of the day the people who build these cars value what they have built otherwise they wouldn't do it. A lot of the bosozoku cars aren't even street legal and are only taken to shows using temporary plates that they get allowing them to drive the car for a day.

All in all cars are just a thing to make us happy right? So lets let everyone be happy : )

This is the big problem, most extreme bosozokus are dismantled to move around. They show up to the meets and attach all their spoilers, then take them apart when they go home

I can dig some of the small wheels with stretched tires and fender flares because that was cool back in the 80's. But not the ankle busting 4 foot snow plow spoilers.

I even dig the mild dual upward exhaust pipes. But not the ridiculous long pipes. Basically not anything that would cause people to laugh at me or make a woman not want to ride in the car.

I knew the boso cars would cause a negative reaction, but they are quite interesting to look at imo. I dont plan see much inspiration from these cars as the other more simple kind. What I really wanted was to drag out some starquesters that might have things like this already in the works, I know theres a couple people interested in smaller wheels. As far as Im concerned our cars came stock with a ridiculous bodykit and its awesome the way it is so I wont be changing much since a lot of my ideas in reality would come out bad looking.

Heres some more stateside cars I saw at JCCS

See those horns? Thats gotta be really loud/fun

Really liked the paintjob on this one

While this may be a thing in Japan, unless there's a scene for this local to you, expect to get made fun of. Some of these are so extreme I wouldn't be surprised if even the most devoted "jdm Honda" guys wouldn't get it.

Half these cars look like they are from cartoons. Does that have anything to do with it?

Why the complenty misaligned wheels? Just a look or does it come from somewhere?

If you want to do the oversized tail or something, check out NyCain... He did something using porsche rear body parts. Not my thing, but I'm very impresed he got it to somehow all fit.

Not a fan of his wing tbh, and most guys in my local car clubs have seen these kinds of cars but only one of my friends is building one.

Edit- misaligned wheels are you talking about camber? thats just part of going lower. I dont think theres much inspiration from anime(japanese cartoons) but like I said jap guys go crazy so who knows.

Are you posting this to get confirmation from someone? If you like it then do it. You don't have to convince anyone but yourself

No not at all, Im still a SQ owner haha. I just wanted to hear what you guys here thought about this, Ive wanted to make this thread for a while now but never did. I figured most on here would not like it at all but maybe this would spark interest in new owners around my age that have been picking up these cars lately.

Me personally, I have never really cared

for fads. Something so extreme doesn't last for long.

But that's just my opinion. If you dig it, do it. But be conscious the average person will ask you "WTH MAN?"

Back in the 80's my brother rolled in Corollas' and Nissan pick ups. He had stretched tires on wide rims with the wheel rim poking out.

His Corolla wagon had a wicked sound system and crazy stretched tires, dark tint and a rear spoiler.

His Nissan/ Datsun pick up had same type stretched tires, a killer sound system with 4 12" woofers and a bunch of mid range speakers and tweeters. The whole bed was basically speakers and amps.

The truck bed was on hydros, bed it self would rise above the cab and spin. Was totally awesome and totally 80's.

I liked those fads and I see some resemblance of that in those "jdm" cars.

Objectively it looks cartoonish, exaggerated features on an otherwise proportional subject. To each their own because taste and style are subjective. You can't deny these creations took tons of work and money but if it's worth it is up to you.

I think these cars would be awesome, sure, some are a little goofy but a lot of the cars in the video were pretty cool and well executed. I love to stand out and this would be unique enough to achieve what I like. the only problem is I don't think they would be legal on the street here in Calgary, ab.

I have seen this style before, actually did some research into the origins. It's interesting, but not something I would do to a car that you could actually make fast. I'd consider doing it to a civic just to mock the ricer kids, but that's a lot of money to spend on irony.

Toned down, there are some styling elements that I like. I absolutely love fender flares, on almost anything. The angular look that the nose has looks good on some vehicles as well. But overall, it's just too much.

All that said... It's your car. If you think it looks cool, and have the fab skills/disposable income to do it, go for it. I would actually like to see a thread on the fab work that goes into it, that would be interesting from a technical standpoint.

the red and black #11 is an actual race car, probably JGTC i think, as is the white silvia below it. those are the cars the boso was emulating .

japanese culture is a culture of extremes and style, and often times function is overlooked, in order to push a style extreme (like exaggerated front spoilers)
