KYB or Tokico?

Recommended Posts

What do you guys suggest?  I noticed that the KYB's are much cheaper but are they any good?  I am just looking for some good handling and want to go with the KYB's unless the Tokicos are that much better.  Any opinions here?

I do not know if there is much of a difference in performace.  ToKicos will lower your car a bit from what I hear.  If you are concerned about the quality of the KYB have no fear.  If you pull your factory strut housing out you will see

MITSUBISHI stamped into the housing.  Directly below that is KYB stamped into the housing.  You got it, Mitsu put KYB's on the car from the factory.  Not just the inserts either. [glow=pink,2,300]...........................[/glow]

SQF,

Tokico's shouldn't lower the car...it's primarily the springs that determine ride height and wheel well gap.  Dan

Im just saying "from what I hear".  I have KYB units but have heard the Tokico's lower the car a little.

Both would be viable options.

Ernie I didn't know the adjustables were Tokico!

Cool

Yeah, I'm almost 100% positive about the 8-ways.  Considering I have one of my spare front 8-ways sitting in my garage, you think I'd just walk my happy tail out there and check... but, eh, I'm comfy right where I'm at.  :)

Tokico only made the stadard struts, KYB built the 8 eway adjustables. In fact if you look at their product line, they offer the same 8 way adjustable aftermarket for other vehicles. But not StarQuests. Mitsu probably has exclusive rights. Struts should not affect ride height.

My $0.02, get the KYB's they are nice.  The Tokico's are stiffer and you will feel every bump in the road.  If you have ever drove a quest with a set of GOOD 8 way adjustables set all the way on stiff, its about like that, maybe even a little stiffer.  Performance wise, I guess the Tokico's are prolly a LITTLE better, but I like the ride of the kyb's better.  However, if you want Tokico's I got a set with only a 100 miles on them  ;D Email me if you want um, I'll sell um at 25% off retail.

So KO, will the KYB's still give good handling or does that suffer?  I am also debating which set to get.  I've had tokico's before so I know that they're good, but I always thought KYB was like a step down from them. ???

Anyways, let me know. ;D

No the handling is great, I've always heard nothing but good about KYB's, and after having them on the car I have nothing but good to say about them. I had some friends out in Florida that recommended that I go with the KYB's, and these guys know their Starquest stuff8)

Factory 8-ways are available from the mitsu dealer .. u will prolly just need the part number off the strut because when i was there they were havin trouble trying to look them up.  but yeah the money thing ... i think for a front it was like $370.00 EACH or somewhere in that area.

If you still need the PN for the 8-ways, I can probably find them (each strut is different). The springs are also different. I presumed the difference to be just in response, but there may be a difference in ride height too. I converted a std. suspension '89 to the handling pkg. and yes, it's expensive. At full retail, probably $1000 per corner, or close. Just the 245/45X16 tires are expensive and many suppliers offer very limited models in that size. But to the best I could find, the only things involved are the struts, springs, wheels and tires.

when i lowered my 87 quest with eibach springs i put in tokicos, and my 87 had tokicos stock which i took out, several were starting to leak. I am very happy with the ride and stiffness. i have read else where that the tokicos are a notch better than the kyb's. I have use KYB in other cars and been very happy. Bilstein and Koni also made a shock for it as well but read that the tokicos were best - I am happy

after lowering I went back down to stock tire sizes as i was hitting in the rear wells over hard bumps with the 245s, camber was also exagerated.
