the boost gauge on factory dash isn't a good indicator of a functionign turbo exactly, it's what the ECU "thinks" boost is based off the MAF readings.  i would get the hoses all plugged in/lines replaced for starters, then do a smoke test for leaks.

thanks for the insight, i have never seen that kind of wear before, what RPM"s where you spinning to? i was planning on the dodge.3.0 rollers on the stock cam with a non jet valve head from dad and schneider HD springs for starting off, as the idea behind rollers is to reduce wear.

is it possible it wasn't supplying enough oil to the valve stems causing un/under lubricated wear and tear?

the 86's where notorious for MAF issues, you could plug in a brand new one and have it not work ( lovely mitsubishi electronics of the time)

there is also a MAP sensor along the firewall it is suppose to correlate with, which could explain why it runs when the MAF is unplugged and aside from a rich idle, drive fine.
