Can anyone tell me the measurement from the jz engine block to the center of the shifter hole? Is it only the mk3 supra version of the r154 trans that lines up with the shifter hole?

Yes, the mk3 r154 is what you would want.  The tripod version of the R154 (came in the Soarer) has the shifter location moved back about 4-5".  It will still work, you would just have to cut a notch out of the shifter area on the tunnel.  There is a member that started a build thread on his 1j swap where he used the Soarer trans.
