RonnieJ
I thought I would start this since I see it ever few weeks on all forums SQ. People offering manifolds prior to us were adamant about "bracing the turbo" The issues is they were just doing it wrong. That has lead to bad information being regulated by most of the SQ community. 1. A brace is needed when using thin wall normal exhaust tubing 16 gauge2. Thin wall exhaust tubing has been used on 100% race applications where every pound saved matters3. Thick wall/Schedule 40 pipe is used for street/track applications as it can handle the weight and street use as well as constant heat cycles seen by street cars4. If you want to run a thin wall turbo manifold you must brace the turbo and the wastegate as the weight of the two will easily crack the thin wall5. You do not brace the manifold/header as its been done before6. Bracing the manifold does not allow for expansion7. Manifolds expand and contract with heat cycles8. The combination of weight and the manifold being braced doesnt allow for that expansion9. Doing so causes the weakest part to give You all know how its been before but here are some photos of braces done properly. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5409902186_c591b91dca.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5054/5409906990_8602ef27b9.jpg http://www.key-ideas.com/turbo%20brace%201.JPG http://www.gurneyflap.com/Resources/DSC03780.jpg Here is a shot of Schedule 40 next to 16 gauges stainless so you get the idea of different sizes http://i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o526/JDLAutoRon/Sch40vsExh.jpg Edited February 8, 2015 by RonnieJ
