Failing Emissions, any tips?
boosted4g64 replied to boosted4g64's topic in Newbie Question and Answers
Just an update.. It finally passed after I fixed the timing. And my overheating issue was do to my condenser. Previous owner painted the car and condenser lol... No air flow and a bad fan ground.. But thanks everyone for your help. Next step is 4g64 swap next summer :-) -
Really? That low? Considering the stock T-stat is like 190. My DSM likes to be around 210, my crotch rocket is 222
-
OK I know where the needle should be on the gauge. But what temp is normal operating temp? Like 210, 220? Need a number so I an watch my temp gauge... I like seeing numbers not just position on a gauge
-
While on this topic, what doe these cars like to see for normal operating temp?

I'm not sure about a 160. Factory is 195, I put a 185 in mine and it stays cooler except on the highway. But I just figured out mine got to hot on highway because by timing was way off. Do you have your a/c still? If not ditch that condenser up from so the radiator can get more air flow. Those are my ideas

Failing Emissions, any tips?

Figured it out.. Timing light had an adjuster knob that was advanced, set the light to 0 and car was at 0 also.. This might explain both the emissions and the getting hot on the dyno.. To advanced makes heat -
Failing Emissions, any tips?

Checked my ignition timing and it was 15deg ATDC... According to the manual since I'm high altitude I ground the connector and set to 15deg BTDC.. The most adjustment I can get is to 8deg ATDC. Is my distributor in wrong or what? Please hello, last I felt with distributors was 10years ago in school -

Air filter is good, I do believe the injectors are good, timing is getting checked tomorrow. We used to do no emissions for vehicles older than 25 years but then they changed it to must be a 1975 or older so just missed that law change. God I hate emissions, doesn't help my shop doesn't have a 5 gas.. can't wait for my 4g64 swap so I can go crazy with the tuning -

Just did plugs and wires on the car, haven't checked timing. I don't have EGR either and the NoX passes with flying colors.. I'll check timing. What's it supposed to be at? And do I need to ground out a connector or anything like on the DSM? -
Hey guys, my 88 starion has failed emissions twice now here in denver. I'm only failing in HC (hydro carbons) and by only half a point. everything else is falling in range with ease. any ideas on how to get the HC down? in the past i have disconnected the waste gate on my DSM so that it wouldn't boost and that seemed to work, but I'm not sure how the starion would react to that. and on another note my car runs great and stays cool when driving around town even on hot days but when i take it to emissions in the morning when the temp is only 55 the car gets hot.. think its just lack of airflow since they only use a fan to "simulate" driving. FYI- im not really modded, i put the stock IC pipe on for testing so i wouldn't vent the BOV i had on and I'm running a turbo back system with a single cat, i do not have the factory pre cat and running stock boost
-
Its cool, im not a broncos fan either lol
-
Just an update, compression is good and it passes the head check.(got one on my shop :-) ) she idles a lot better on cold starts I i replaced my turbo inlet. But still puts out smoke on cold starts and it stinks like fuel. I'm thinking leaky injector now.

Manual boost contoller install?
boosted4g64 replied to boosted4g64's topic in Newbie Question and Answers
Ahhh... Thank you for the link... And I don't have the 4g64 in the car just yet. Its in the build process. Hopefully I'll have the swap done in 3-5 months -
OK, silly question.. ive done some searching and i cant seem to find out how to install a MBC on my 88 Starion.. I have never delt with a turbo with multi ports on the wastegate so it kinda threw me for a loop... any help would be great... thanks in advance guys
