My wing fabrication, the progression

Recommended Posts

My starting point. The window edge is shaped wrong, the wing is too narrow and it's got a bow in it towards the window, doesn't lie flat against the hatch.

cut the under side out and shaped the front edge to match the window line.

after cutting and fitting for an hour and reshaping the side wings...

There, now what about my wing? what do you think?

I drove it on the freeway today and I can feel it working, doesn't really feel like drag, but my blown GR-2s aren't bouncing around when I'm in the number 3 lane...how could I measure downforce?

Looking good so far!

I had been trying to figure out a way to do something similar using a second stock hatch trim piece. Since they are fiberglass I figured I could position it like I wanted and mesh it together with the one glued to the glass. I was going to extend the new spoiler over the quarter panels to hide that gap. You might consider that as well.

I thought about extending it out over the quarter panel, but then wondered about vibration causing it to rub on the quarter panel paint, we'll see, it's not too late to do it if I can get the body lines to match up

its about two and a half inches longer and the rake is about four degrees higher than factory. Screwed up putting in the third brake light so I am a little behind schedule....I also now know why people don't paint their carbon fiber....at first I thought it was just a douchey way of showing off, "hey look, I have carbon fiber" but after prepping my wing for paint I have found that carbon fiber is wavy, like Hawaii North Shore wavy... It has taken me four hours to prep my car, the entire car but it has taken me an hour and a half to prep that wing and I'm still not done...

Me like...

only problem I see arising from this is....if you haven't already gotten the, "is that a fox body mustang with widebody fenders?" question....well, you're going to get it now...haha.

Can't wait to see the finish product. And, keep the rake of it, thats what these cars need for the rear spoiler is one thats a little more up in the air.

did you ever finish this? and if so could you update with more pics of it mounted? thanks

I had to change some things about the way I mounted it, my intention was to have the wing similar to the factory wing, in that it was three pieces. After driving it for a while I came to the conclusion that my little side wings would not stay on the car with the surface area they had connecting them to the car, so I am fitting them to the main wing. It will be a single wing that contours to the side of the car...I like, I have one side attached but not finished, I'll upload some pictures if I get a chance to take some tomorrow.

I was going to make a three piece wing like the factory, but making the gaps equal turned out to be more of a PITA than I wanted to deal with, so I glassed the side pieces to the center...I actually like it better...I just have to fabricate the end caps.
