Starquest hates newbies

Hey everyone I Joined not to long ago but found this site is a bit difficult to use for newbies when I look at the recent members list it's clear to see. anyways back on track. My name is Kevin Alan and I live in California just out of Sacramento. I grew up loving cars and never thought I'd own a conquest but whilst searching for an MR2 me and my girlfriend stumbled across an old Conquest that we just couldn’t pass up. The former owners had kept the car in great condition (mostly because of their old age) and as a kid I can recall admiring it every time I saw it passing my buss stop. It costed me $3,000 which I felt was a fair price especially because they agreed to take payments for the car. The Car is a Plymouth model and even better it's a Technica so it's got all the technical innovations a fan of the 80's could ever ask for. The car runs great and has only had a head replaced after it overheated. I plan on keeping the car bone stock as molesting the car after this many years just doesnt seem right. I was hoping to get some help on how to start a thread on this site as I am new and new to threads. thanks

nice looking car. i welcome you to the addiction and hope you know what you are in for:)

 

as for it being difficult for newbies, i think they make it difficult on themselves. They are generally lazy and just want to post and have people fix their car without taking the time to read the faq, previous v/m posts and the factory service manual (FSM).

.I can tell, they were very adamant about reading through the faq before posting so I don't want to look like a d*** if I have a question. It's my first turbo car and I know parts are hard to come by. I honestly havent seen one locally in over a year and pick and pull hasn't had one since I bought it. I'm a huge car nut so I have general knowledge on just about every car. I havn't received a compliment on my car since I got it so thank you, I got it new tires the other day and everyone at the shop kept calling it a Daytona K-car. I would have corrected them but it was too funny to know they work on cars for a living.

Thank you for the info. Certainly going to have to look further into that. the car is an 86 and has just a few door dings and a crack in the passenger tail-light. I'm looking to rebuild the engine within the next year simply because reliability is very important to me. I'm completely in love with this car already and would like to keep it till some future apocalyptic band of scavengers pry it from my cold dead hands

Here's a little bit of what i've done. this is to an extra pop cover I had. I'm pretty good with my hands and if I do modify my car I would like it to have my own touch.

Before you commit to rebuilding check your current situation out thoroughly. How's the compression? Oil pressure? How hot does it run? These motors are solid, especially if you bought it from somebody that didn't abuse the bejesus out of it. If the numbers are all fine I'd do a good electrical cleanup on it (fusable links, grounds, etc...), service all the fluids, and probably call it a day. Oh, how many miles?

Good to know thank you. The Compression is good truoghout and the oils are changed religiously. I have noticed a few electrical hiccups. so I will look into that. the turbo does scare me a bit. but other than that it's a solid car

Sweet car! Welcome, there is a TON of info on this site. The Newbie checklist has been a godsend for me. Would love to see more pics of the interior!

 

I'll take some photos when the sun comes out. It has the digital dash and the talking voice. As well as the seatbelts that are attached to the door. A few times squeezing the crap out of me and I've learned to release the seat belt before exiting. It's a 5 speed manual with a maroon interior no cracks in the dash but the leather seats are cracking.

Unless the leather is actually broken, you can buy leather lotion and save the seats. Any lotion with lanolin in it will work. I personally used turtle wax emerald green at walmart. Anyway, squeeze it on the leather and swab it over with your hands. Just goop it on. Then let it sit for 20 mins or so. It will disapear. Do it again and again till it stopps soaking in. Then get a clean cloth and wipe it to a nice shine. You'll find the leather is softer and more flexible.

 

I've saved lots of leather seats this way. If you do it to GOOD leather seats every year or two they will never crack, btw...

More flatty love! There seem to be a bunch of then popping up recently, which is awesome. Would love to see a video featuring the talking voice, I've never heard on before. Technica models are so damn cool :).

Looks like my old one, except a big contrast in Color. Mine was black. Same wheels, decals, etc. Good luck. Every1Zgot1 is correct on the Newbie checklist. It's a bunch of time, but best to do if you to keep it going a while. My 87 got traded in 97 with 92,000 miles on it. Mostly trouble free. Had to replace an alternator that's about it.

Until you have spent upwards of $20,000 to $25,000 dollars on YOUR car, or when you have spent more than one year keeping your car and doing work to upgrade it......You will get no compliments from me. Doing work on your car is much more important than the amount of money you spend on it. I was just giving you a example about how much members love these cars and the money spent on them. If your looking to post a profit by putting money into one of these cars......FORGET IT. Appox. value on the open market resale value: $2500.00. Some have been owners for over 20 years. I myself, 23 years owning the same Starion. That is why we approach every new owner with caution. "Here today, gone tomorrow". These cars are not cheap to work on. Most parts are not obtainable. And when you do find them you will pay up the a.. for them.So, You may have got yourself into something more than you bargained for. Time will tell ;)

 

P.S. I hate Flatties :P Starquest WIDEBODIES rule :D Might as well buy a Pontiac Sunfire.They sure in the hell look like a Starquest flattie :lol:
