1955 Chevy Truck

Ok so now it's officially become a family obsession. My car build is on its way. My son loves my car so much I just bought him an '88 Conquest. And now my wife has entered the fray. She's always wanted a classic so I went and found one...a 1955 Chevy 3100 Series Two. She looks rough in the pictures but she's got it where it counts...

The floor board is solid. The bed is solid. All the glass is intact. And I've already rebuilt the original Chevy 261 I6. Transaxle and rears are good and roll perfectly. It's going to be a true restoration...no rat-rodding here! Needless to say, the body work will come first. I'll post pics on the progress as it comes along.

Ok, well we've finally gotten started on my wife's 1955 Chevy 3100 Series Pick-up truck. Starting to strip it down...what better place to start than the hood. I've got to tell you, 57 years-worth of weather has really provided us a challenge!

Some more pics of the hood after we took it off the truck. The sheet metal underneath the paint/patina/etc is actually in pretty good shape...surprisingly.

LOL, yes that's the '88 TSi I bought for my son. Just got the motor and tranny for it...now just to find the time!

We're finding that an 80-grit flapp pad on an angle grinder to be much more successful. I will follow that up with a .14 wire disc, and then a 150 grit pad on my random orbital. I'll go again with a 250 if needed. Of course we'll have to use the blaster on some parts down the road...something to look forward to!

Niko, some constructive criticism. stop using 80grit flapper, and switch to 50/60 grit on a DA sander an ease up on the pressure there's a lot of swirls/mark you'll have to putty in that I can see. The main trick to getting OLD rust like that off, is to let the sandpaper do the work w/o puttin so much pressure into the tool. I'd also look into some petroleum jelly to pre-treat rust, then sand.

Well we actually tried that, but it just wouldn't dig in very well....was taking FOREVER. So switched to the flapper with the plans of going over again with the 50gr. One piece done that way and it looks good. The nice thing is the sheet metal on these oldies is nice and thick and very strong.

Was the sandpaper loadin' up on ya? Put a sheet in some warm water w/some dawn for a couple minutes an it won't load up w/dust n crapola. My dad taught me that trick, an best of luck w/55 will be keepin an eye on build, looks good even to a ford guy (me). BTW, lookin' @ pics, you're as lucky as Robert, aintcha? LOL!!
