DieHARDmitsu.
This rebuilt power steering box came on Mitsu Trucks, its similar to the Starion/Conquest OEM Units but it has a shorter splined shaft. http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/squaddy11/DSC01176.jpg To make it work, I extended the OEM coupler using a 1" (O.D) steel tubing, 1/8" thick, length 22mm http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/squaddy11/DSC01165.jpg Used a mallet to tap it in, fits very snug. http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/squaddy11/DSC01166.jpg http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/squaddy11/DSC01170.jpg http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/squaddy11/DSC01178.jpg http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss25/squaddy11/DSC01183.jpgSwivel Joint re-greased before install Feels very tight...no freeplay at the steering wheel Edited January 16, 2012 by DieHARDmitsu. mstieg
So the truck's steering box is the same except the shaft is 22mm shorter? If so that's perfect since couplers are NLA & I'd like more room to fit a rag joint in there for some road bump absorption like the stock rubber's meant to do. Great post. DieHARDmitsu.
Yea 22mm is the difference on mine. I made some minor adjustments to the screw on top of the steering box for tighter steering. Italmost feels like a rack since there's no more worn out coupler to delay steering response. blue_crush
Do you know if the manual steering box from a D50 or mighty max is the same distance? I'm in the middle of this as we speak and have been working with zactek on this but he can't recall if it was 22mm or not. Great wright up btw. Pictures help out a lot.Did you just dig all the rubber off the coupler?
importwarrior
what coupler did the truck use? is the turning ratio the same for both steering boxes? what year trucks came with this steering gear box? zactek
what coupler did the truck use? is the turning ratio the same for both steering boxes? what year trucks came with this steering gear box? The early production trucks used the same coupler as Starion. their columns were 22mm longer (I looked it up).The turning ratio for the boxes was higher, but when I had one in mine, I DID NOT feel much difference.Don't know what years exactly, but all early D50/Mighty Max used them.Blue Crush, did you see my thread "Manual steering gearbox?" ? I believe the pics of the extended coupler were on pages 5 and 6 of that thread,(Along with every other question/debate about manual steering) I did my coupler a little differently than DieHardMitsu Zack K.
